Obituary of EMMA FRUMEN
EMMA FRUMEN
July 28, 1927-March 4, 2017
With heavy hearts we say goodbye to our much loved mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Emma passed away peacefully with family at her side.
She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Milan Frumen, in 2014. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Ema Lenio (Tom), Helen Floresco, and Josef Frumen, her grandchildren, Jonas and Eli (Trisha) Lenio, Aaron (Rhonda) and Sean (Jessica) Floresco, Chris Demeria, Jessica (Wade) Klippenstein, Jaclyn (Nelson), Jill (Kevin), Adamik and Alex Frumen, her great-grandchildren, Tasha, Max, Milo, Sebastian, Vincent, Nelson Jr., Theodore and her many friends.
Emma was born in Nuskova, Slovenia formerly Yugoslavia. She was the youngest in her family of eight (four sisters and three brothers). She went to work in Hungary as a cook when she was 16 years old. It was there, during the Second World War, that she met Milan after he escaped from a prisoner train and fled to Hungary in 1943. The two married in 1951. With their children, they defected in 1957, travelling first to Austria where they lived in a refugee camp for six months. In January of 1958, the family journeyed to Canada by ship, settling in Winnipeg. They socialized with their fellow Slovenian immigrants in Winnipeg, and they helped each other as much as possible to get established in their new country.
Emma worked at Canada Packers in the poultry division for many years and made friends that she had until her passing. Emma and Milan renovated two houses on Grove Street in Point Douglas. They also built and meticulously-maintained a cottage in Whitesands Estates, which later became their retirement home. Emma enjoyed cooking (she was an excellent cook), maintaining her large flower garden, mushroom picking, vegetable gardening, cross country skiing, and going to the beach. Emma loved to travel, and she was fortunate to visit Slovenia on multiple occasions, Hawaii, Switzerland and various cities in Canada and United States. Emma was very generous; visitors never left empty-handed. She was happiest when surrounded by family and friends. Their home was the site of many family gatherings.
Thank you to all her family and friends who visited her over the past three years. The family would also like to thank the staff at Riverview Health Centre, Misericordia Interim Care, and, especially, the wonderful staff and friends at Holy Family Nursing Home.
Funeral arrangements are in care of Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Viewing will be at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 9, with service to follow at 1:30.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Association or Holy Family Nursing Home in Emma’s memory.
