Obituary of STELLA (GOLEBIOWSKI) SHERBO
STELLA ANN SHERBO
(nee Golebiowski)
It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that the family announces the passing of Stella Sherbo. Stella passed away peacefully with family by her side on Tuesday February 28, 2017 at Middlechurch Personal Care Home, at the age of 85.
She is lovingly remembered by her son Roy (Monica), daughter Cathy, son Dan (Laurel), grandchildren Melissa, Rebecca, Bryanna, Ryan and Emily, and step-grandchildren, Leah and Signy as well as nieces, nephews and friends.
Stella was predeceased by her husband Roy to whom she was married for 55 years, parents Adam and Sophie Golebiowski, in-laws Frank and Wilda Sherbo, sisters-in-law Edith (Douglas) Wright, Pearl Jowsey, Ruby (Bob) Smith.
Stella was born in Winnipeg on July 13, 1931 and attended King Edward Junior High School and Isaac Newton High School in the North End. She enjoyed school and excelled academically. Mom always wished she had the opportunity to further her education, but post-secondary education was rarely afforded to women of her era. Her focus on and love for education and learning was passed on to her children and grandchildren.
After she graduated, Stella worked at the Bank of Montreal McGregor and Selkirk. She married Roy on July 12, 1952. Later she stayed at home to take care of her family. She worked part time at Hudson’s Bay Company in the shoe department and later as a bank teller at the Royal Bank on Regent Avenue in Transcona. She enjoyed working at the bank and interacting with her co-workers and customers. She retired in 1990.
Stella had many passions in her life. She enjoyed family gatherings, music, reading, knitting, bowling, golfing, curling, playing cards, especially crib. She also loved going to Bomber games, her visits to the casino, vacationing in Hawaii and taking a Caribbean and Mediterranean cruise. She took special delight in her 10 winters spent with her husband in Mesa, Arizona. She also took pleasure in her time living at Park City Meadows Housing Co-op Ltd. where she met many new friends and participated in many of the activities offered.
Stella was a member of Saint Joseph the Worker Parish and the Catholic Women’s League. She belonged to the Saint John’s Cantius Polish Club, Maple Leaf Senior’s Club and Concordia Daycare Centre.
Stella loved getting together with her family and friends. She was very committed to her children and grandchildren and to her husband, Roy whom she sadly missed for the past 9 years.
Mom was very proud of her family and always supported their endeavours. She was the best wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Mom will be remembered for her patience, unselfishness, kindness, her warm loving heart and devotion to her family.
Our family would like to thank the staff at Middlechurch Personal Care Home and Concordia Hospital for their compassion and kindness during Mom’s final months.
Mom we will hold you forever in our hearts, we will miss you dearly, but now you are at peace, never to suffer again.
Cremation has taken place. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday March 10, 2017 at Saint Joseph the Worker Parish, 505 Brewster Street in Transcona.
