KATHERINE KELLN

Obituary of KATHERINE KELLN

KATHERINE (KAY) ELIZABETH KELLN (nee Dallinger) Peacefully with family by her side, the Lord called Kay from Maples Care Home to her heavenly home at dawn on Wednesday July 25, 2012 at the age of 93 years. Kay was born on March 22, 1919 and was educated in Winnipeg. When Luther Home opened in 1969, Kay was hired as the receptionist/office assistant. After more than 15 years in that capacity, she retired in 1985 at the age of 66. The longtime executive director called Kay the best receptionist he ever had. She made everybody feel comfortable and welcome. Kay was a very active lifelong member of Christ Lutheran Church. She served continuously as a Sunday school teacher for 25 years beginning around 1960. She sang in the choir for 16 years after she retired until a stroke in 2001. She participated in women’s group (ELW) events and especially enjoyed those national conventions which she was able to attend. She served on church council for several years beginning in the 1970s, at one time being the only woman on council. In earlier years, council had been strictly a male domain. As a member of the visitation committee, she made numerous visits and phone calls and sent countless cards and inspirational notes to members, friends and relatives for many years. She also was the unofficial greeter at church by welcoming and getting to know new folks who walked through the door on a Sunday morning as well as following up with folks who had missed service. Kay loved people and touched many lives during the course of her long life, especially through the church and Luther Home. Kay was predeceased by her beloved husband Ed in 1968, her father Adam in 1959, mother Katherine in 1971, brother Adam in 1984, brother Alex in 2002, and sister Eva in 2003. She is survived by a son Duane (Milees) and daughter Cathryn and her two sons, Marc and Sean, plus five great-grandchildren. A special thank you to the staff at Maples Personal Care Home for the care, which Kay received over the last 10 and a half years. Her family also greatly appreciated the care and compassion, which the staff provided to the family in Mom’s final days. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 2 at 3 pm at Christ Lutheran Church, 815 Inkster Blvd. with Pastor Ken Kuhn officiating. Interment will take place at Brookside Cemetery in a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice. "If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s." Romans 14:8
