DR. ALICJA KUFFEL Nee Gromnicka It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of Dr. Alicja Kuffel on the morning of November 18, 2016 after a brief battle with cancer. Alicja passed away peacefully at home at the age of 91, lovingly surrounded by her family. Predeceased by her daughter in infancy, her parents, her sister, and her granddaughter Katrina; she is survived by her husband of 64 years, Dr. Edmund Kuffel, her children Anne (Waldemar), John(Alice), Rick(Susan) and Peter(Theresa), her nine grandchildren, her two great grandchildren and her brother Stan(Diane). Alicja was born in Poland on June 7, 1925. She and her family were displaced during the second world-war several times and eventually made their new home in England. Alicja studied medicine and received her degree from University College, Dublin. During her studies she met the love of her life and future husband, Edmund. In 1968 Alicja and her family immigrated to Winnipeg where she continued her career as a family physician and was especially devoted to the care of her elderly patients. During their time in Winnipeg, Alicja and Edmund were passionately involved in the Polish community and were instrumental in sponsoring many new families to Canada. They were also actively involved in the 1984 visit of Pope John Paul II to Winnipeg which eventually led to a private audience at the Vatican. The family would like to express their thanks to Dr Harris and Dr Kuegle, the nurses, healthcare personnel and especially to Hannah who was one of her primary care givers in Alicja’s final years.
