Obituary of PATRICK PHILIP COUGHLIN
PATRICK PHILIP COUGHLIN
A Joyous Man
November 27, 1928 - October 26, 2016
Patrick passed away peacefully at Seven Oaks Hospital on October 26, 2016 at the age of 87 surrounded by family who loved him. Patrick was pre-deceased by his parents, L. Philip and Zita Kathleen (Burns) Coughlin, his youngest son, Gerald David and brother in law Gordon Horan. He is survived by Isabelle (Livingstone) his best friend and devoted, loving wife of a wonderful 60-year marriage. Cherished father and father in law of Bridget and Havoc Franklin, Tim and Shirley (Lesage), Kevin, Brian and Diane (Butler). Proud and adored grandfather of Vanessa and Ilyse Hoffer, Harris Franklin, Carly, Austin, Jayden and Shea Coughlin and Connor Coughlin. Patrick will be deeply missed by his brother and sister in law Ed and Mary Coughlin and his sister Sheila Horan. Patrick will be affectionately remembered by his nieces, nephews and cousins. Patrick will be honored by his many dear lifelong friends and their families. He truly loved them all.
Patrick enjoyed his life in Winnipeg and lived it to the fullest. He attended St. Ignatius School and St. Paul’s High School. He graduated from the Western College of Auctioneering in Billings, Montana. Patrick was cattleman working with his father, uncles, brother and cousins in J.L. Coughlin Livestock brokerage serving western Canada. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus 1107 and belonged to the parishes of St. Ignatius, St. Paul the Apostle and finally, Holy Rosary Church. During the past two years, he was a resident of Holy Family Home where his days were filled with friendship, activities and wonderful care.
Throughout his life, Patrick believed in the importance of sports as a player, coach and fan for all. Endless hours were spent with his children, grandchildren and friends in hockey arenas, football, soccer and baseball fields, swimming pools, fitness centers, yoga studios and always, golf courses. Into his 80s, he loved to take a ‘walk in the park’ and played golf courses across North America. Every spring he looked forward to another season with his great partners at St. Charles Golf and Country Club where he played in for over 40 years. He knew and taught others about the positive impact of sports in life that fosters lasting dedication, drive and friendship.
Equally, Patrick understood the benefits of the arts as an artist, actor and enthusiast. Forever he encouraged artistic pursuits for himself, his children and grandchildren in art, music, dance, singing and drama. He was a dedicated cast member in productions at Rainbow Stage, Venture Theatre and Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre during the 1970s and 80s. He was an inspired artist and sculptor all through life. Patrick studied at the Forum Art Institute, Winnipeg, Emily Carr School of Art, Vancouver and a member of Clifton Studios, invariably sharing his gift with family, friends and peers.
Above all, Patrick was a joyous man and his exuberance for everything life had to offer was contagious. He found the key to happiness through the people and relationships in his life – his wife, Isabelle, his children and grandchildren, family, friends, colleagues and new friends he met. He will be dearly missed.
The Coughlin family offers a special thank you to the Intensive Care Doctors and Nursing team at Seven Oaks Hospital for their extraordinary care.
Visitation will be held on Friday, November 4 at 10:00 AM followed by The Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM at Holy Rosary Church, 510 River Avenue, Winnipeg.
