Obituary of ANNE HRYHOR-MOSQUIN

ANNE HRYHOR-MOSQUIN (nee Zwozdesky) With remorse, the family of Anne Hryhor-Mosquin announces her passing on October 13, 2016, while at the St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care Unit, in Winnipeg, MB. Anne was born to immigrant parents, Ivan and Maria Zwozdesky in Parkerview, Saskatchewan, on February 20, 1928. She is survived by her daughter Illonna Bohonos, grand-daughters Janet (Jason) Zaluski, Krista Bohonos, and great- grandchildren Julia and Jaden Zaluski. Anne was predeceased by her parents, all of her siblings, husbands Morris Hryhor and John Mosquin, and son-in-law William Bohonos. As a girl, although she was schooled in the English language, Anne also learned to speak, read and write Ukrainian fluently. She enjoyed socializing, acting in plays, singing and playing the mandolin. Anne was blessed with a beautiful alto voice which made singing a life-long passion. As a member of many choirs, she shared this gift of music and rarely passed up a chance to harmonize. Her interest in music included various genres and artists from Tommy Hunter to Leonard Cohen, from ethnic folk songs to liturgical compositions. Anne Zwozdesky and Morris Hryhor were married in 1945, started a family, then moved to Manitoba. She settled into being a mother and wife of a school principal. Together they lived in the rural towns of Hadashville, Hazelglen, Tolstoi, Oakbank, Tyndal and Narol before moving to Winnipeg in 1958. During these years Anne commuted to the city for employment. Over 20 years, as a self-taught seamstress, she became an expert garment finisher. With the onset of Morris’ illnesses, Anne took on the role of sole care provider. Fortunately, the birth of and activities with two grandchildren added great joy during the difficult years until Morris’ death in 1987, after 42 years of marriage. In the years following, Anne enjoyed spending time with her extended family throughout Canada, holidaying in Arizona and visiting family in Ukraine. In 1995, John Mosquin married Anne. During their nine years together, they enjoyed gardening, mushroom picking, perogy making, bird watching, square dancing, bowling and travelling to Hawaii and Ukraine. As a member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Winnipeg along with the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada, Anne participated in many fundraising projects and activities. She demonstrated the art of braiding bread, Easter egg painting (pysanky) and volunteered countless hours doing kitchen duty for numerous church events. Anne was proud of her Ukrainian heritage. She loved all of its traditions which she shared with her family preparing twelve meatless dishes on Orthodox Christmas Eve and a basket for blessing on Orthodox Easter Sunday morning. Cooking and baking gave her great pleasure and she was happiest when others were enjoying food that she had prepared. Anne’s family expresses profound gratitude to the staff on Unit 2A at Holy Family Personal Care Home in Winnipeg, for their thoughtful and dedicated attention while ministering to her needs over the past three years. As well, heartfelt thanks are extended to the St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care Unit for their compassionate and expert care. Prayers will be sung Friday, October 21, 2016, at 7:00 pm at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. A funeral service will take place Saturday, October 22, 2016, at 1:00 pm with a viewing at noon at Cropo Funeral Chapel; Reverend Father Gene Maximiuk officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Anne’s memory to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. Peter and Paul, (cemetery fund) Box 22, Nipawin, Saskatchewan, S0E 1E0 or the St. Boniface Hospital Endowment Fund for Palliative Care.
