ANDREW OPITZ

Obituary of ANDREW ANTHONY OPITZ

ANDREW ANTHONY OPITZ October 24, 1926 – March 3, 2016 After a full and long life, Andy passed away on March 3rd, at the age of 89 years. Andy was a true gentleman whose kindness, generosity and humour left an impact on every person he met. His smile, easy-going nature and interest in others were trademarks of his character. Andy led by example and taught others the value of living a happy life. He lifted people up with a simple wave or a warm hello. Andy was a hard-working son, husband and father. During his lifetime, he provided for his family as a meat delivery boy in the North End streets of Winnipeg, a garment presser at Jacob Crowley and a hydraulic press operator at Jim Pattison Group. He celebrated a well-deserved retirement at the age of 64 in true Opitz style. Andy’s priority, even into his last days, was the comfort and well-being of his family, especially the love of his life Lee, of 65 years. He will be lovingly missed by his daughters Susan (Russ), Janet (Mike), Joanne (Ken) and Pat (Aaron), his grandchildren, Melissa (Dan), Nick (Laura), Paul (Kristy), Jessica (Todd), David (Trisha) , Meghan, Kevin (Jordan), Kyle (Andrea), Ari and Mia and great grandchildren, Jacob, Jonathan, Alex and Zach. He is survived by his brother Marty (Sylvia), his sister Margaret (Don), and sisters-in-law Dot and Barb, brother-in-law Lawrence and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his infant son, Andrew, his parents Andrew and Theresa, cousin Martin (Unc) his grand-daughter Teresa, brothers Paul and Bob, sister Madge, brothers-in-law Charlie and Gerry and niece Judy. Andy served as an executive member of St. Joseph’s Men’s Club. His participation in the Friday night ten pin bowling league led to personal and familial friendships that lasted a lifetime. Andy was a sports fanatic. A gymnast, swimmer and volleyball player in his youth, Andy continued his enjoyment as a Blue Bomber season ticket holder and was a #1 fan, attending grandchildren’s athletic events and performances. A love and appreciation of music and singing was at the core of who Andy was, and he shared his voice always, as a choir member, and at impromptu gatherings and family events. The gift of music and devotion to family is Andy’s lifetime legacy. The Family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff at Holy Family Home for their compassionate care. Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, March 10, 2016 at 10:30 a.m., St. Alphonsus Church, Munroe Avenue and Brazier St. Interment will follow at a later date.
