Obituary of WANDA HORODYNSKI
WANDA HORODYNSKI (NEE NOWAK)
July 26, 1924 – December 22, 2015
Peacefully on December 22, 2015, a golden heart stopped beating at the age of 91. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Wanda Horodynski.
Wanda was born in Lubaczów, Poland to Elizabeth and Michael Nowak. Wanda leaves to cherish her memory, six daughters: Donna Krowiak, Mary Wojciechowski, Elizabeth Halabus, Celina (Bill) Thater, Anne (Robert) Schaffer and Valentine (Paul) Szun; daughter-in-law Donna Horodynski: 16 grandchildren: Paul (Jana) Krowiak, Renata (Pat) Lelliott, Lila (Glenn) Veldkamp, Lucy Hart, Jerry Wojciechowski (Kathy), Robert Halabus, Elaine (Dave) Popove, Adam (Michelle) Bernhardt, Dean (Brie-Ann) Bernhardt, David (Christine) Bernhardt, Shawn Schaffer (Mary), Nicholas Szun, Matthew Szun, Jeannette (Robert) Duguay, Jason Horodynski and Justin Horodynski; and 14 great-grandchildren: Kurtis and Shayla Krowiak, Laura Lelliott, Kaden and Brennen Veldkamp, Benjamin and Aleesha Hart, Tyson and Aleisha Popove, Samuel and Sheldon Bernhardt, Joshua and Kieran Duguay and Chase Horodynski.
Wanda is also survived by nephew Janusz (Lucyna) Kostefko and niece Elżbieta Kostefko; great-niece Agata (David) Negrych; great-nephew Greg (Sylvia) Kostefko and great-great nephews Tristan Negrych and Logan, Gavin and Ferris Kostefko. She leaves extended family and friends in Canada and Poland.
She was predeceased by her husband Michał in 1987, her son Victor in 2004, her daughter Alicja in 1946, her mother Elizabeth Nowak in 1966 and father Michael Nowak in 1961, her sister Emilia Kostefko in 1993, her twin sister Anda Nowak at the age of 4, her brother Jan Nowak during the war, her nephew Bolesław Kostefko in 2008 and recently her son-in-law Richard Halabus on October 2, 2015.
Wanda’s ancestry roots started in Canada in 1928 when her father immigrated to Winnipeg to make a better life for the whole family followed by her mother, then her sister Emilia. Wanda immigrated to Canada with her husband Michał along with their six children in 1964. Their last child Valentine was born in Canada. Wanda worked for Canada Post and Kelekis Restaurant. The family resided on Redwood at Main. Later mama enjoyed living at the Canadian Polish Manor for the past 18 years where she made many wonderful friends.
Mama loved to travel to numerous places including Poland, Florida, across Canada and spending time at the lake with family. A Sunday drive down River Road and going for ice cream to the Half Moon in Lockport was a highlight for her. She was a wonderful cook and baker. Mama enjoyed bingo and word searches until her last days. She was very famous for knitting slippers for all her family and friends. Wanda would never miss the Lawrence Welk Show, listening to Bobby Vinton and attending André Rieu Concerts.
Mama was a very special lady who lived a simple life but made an extraordinary difference in the lives of her family and those who knew her. She was a faithful parishioner of the Holy Ghost Roman Catholic Church.
Mama was proud to be our “Queen” and she called us her “Angels”.
The family would like to thank all the staff at the Holy Family Home (St. Mary’s wing) for all their loving care.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 with viewing at 10:00 a.m. followed by mass at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Ghost Roman Catholic Church, 341 Selkirk Ave. Interment to follow at Holy Ghost Cemetery at 4387 Main St.
In lieu of flowers, please kindly consider a donation in Wanda’s memory to Holy Ghost Roman Catholic Church, Holy Family Home or a charity of choice.
Wanda created beautiful memories that will live in our hearts forever. “Rest In Peace” Mama, Babcia and Pra Babcia. We love you and will miss you dearly!
Wieczny odpoczynek racz jej dać Panie, a światłość wiekuista niechaj jej swieci na wieki wieków. Amen.
