With heavy hearts the family of Verna Bernice Sleeva announces the peaceful passing of a wonderful wife, loving mother, devoted grandmother, sister and friend. We wish to give thanks to a peaceful end with Alzheimer's disease at 85 years old.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 64 years Steve, daughter Cathy (Michael), sons Rikk (Peggy), Ken (Terri), Ray (Debbie), grandchildren Jennifer (Shawn), Jeremy, Chris, Lauren (Rory), Tyler, Trevin, Teagan, great grandchildren Bianca, Catelina, Ethan, sister Elsie Douglas, brothers-in-law Paul, Ray, sisters-in-law Florence, Elizabeth, Bernice, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bernice was predeceased by her parents Catherine and Andrew Tolpa, sister Jean Vien, and a sister Helen in infancy.
Verna or Bernice, Grandma or Auntie Bee to her family and friends was born and lived most of her life in Winnipeg. Met her soulmate and best friend Steve at a barn dance at Logan and Keewatin. She was a stay at home Mom raising four children. She loved to garden (prize winning flowers) and was an awesome cook. Many family gatherings were held at the Sleeva home, which brought her much joy. Bernice's knitting and handicrafts were delightful presents for the entire family and friends. She was a devoted Catholic and attended St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cathedral faithfully. She will be missed by all who knew her.
The family would like to thank Dr. Balko her family doctor of many years. We would also like to thank her home care workers Christina, José, and Clothelde for their kindness and help. Also we would like to give a heartfelt thank you to the paramedics and emergency staff at St. Boniface Hospital.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 11, at 2:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street.
In lieu of flowers donation may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
