Obituary of KAY KOWERKO
KAY KOWERKO
(nee HAMERNYK)
On March 16, 2015 at Holy Family Nursing Home our mother passed away at the age of 101 ½ years.
Kay is survived by her daughter Virginia, son Jerry, 4 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and sister Frances.
She was predeceased by husband Henry in 1966.
Kay was born September 12, 1913 in Inwood, MB. In her early years she volunteered for the Red Cross (sewing). Later the family moved to Jonquiere, QC for a short time. Back to Winnipeg to extend the family. Later went to work at the original Chocolate Shop, then to Royal Alexander Hotel until it closed, and the Marlborough Hotel. After a tragic accident in 1966, it took her a few months to recover. A strong woman she worked to restore health and went to work at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Squash Club and then the Viscount Gort till her retirement. Her life was filled with her grandchildren, family and friends.
She enjoyed Bingo, VLT’s, going to Warroad on the Red Eye every Friday with Betty and Al. She liked to walk and she would find change, trinkets. Some of the change she saved for ‘Rainy Days”. Mom was always willing to tell you a story about where she found her trinkets that she displayed on a wall hanger in her kitchen. She also liked to travel on the bus tours and told a lot of jokes. She travelled to many parts of the States, Mexico and Hawaii. She loved to dance and attended most concerts and functions at the home.
Many thanks to the staff on the Saint Francis Ward, especially Marcie and Cathy at Holy Family Home.
