Obituary of J. RUSSELL MCLAUGHLIN
J. RUSSELL MCLAUGHLIN
January 28, 1976 - January 12, 2015
Russ was a generous man who would always give a helping hand never expecting anything in return as many of his friends can attest to. His laughter and sensitivity will be missed by his mother Susan, father Doug and brother Andrew and all of his family and friends whose lives he touched.
Russ was a very loving, caring, and compassionate man making him an easy person to love and be around.
During his life Russ was a great sports enthusiast whether as a spectator or participant. Many a Saturday and Sunday was spent with friends watching hockey or football. He enjoyed playing hockey for most of his childhood and well into his twenties. In his youth he especially enjoyed sailing with his brother Andrew and dog Babe at Gull Lake. Much time was also spent when he was young with his mom, dad, and brother swimming fishing and canoeing at the Lake of the Woods.
Russ never missed the opportunity to travel with friends and family. Some of his favourite destinations were Hong Kong, Hawaii, Mexico and Cuba and, of course, numerous places across Canada and the United States.
He joined the Society for Creative Anachronism at the age of 16 and as his assumed character “Thorolf” of the Barony of Castel Rouge became very proficient at costume design and constructing armor. Russ’ membership in this organization led to many lasting friendships.
Russ is described by his friends as being genuine, level headed, creative, warm- hearted, protective and funny. The world will be a lesser place without him.
