Obituary of MARY PYL

MARIA PYL It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Maria Pyl on January 11, 2015. Remaining to cherish her memory are her son Wally and daughter Steffie (Dennis) Wawrykow; grandchildren Michael (Kirsten), Kalyn (Stefan),Teresa (Brendan), Mika (Mark), and Krista; and great-grandchildren Lena, Hryts, Zenon, and Mateyko. Maria was predeceased by her husband Mychajlo (Michael) and daughter-in-law Darlene. Maria was born June 30, 1918, in Budzyn, Ivano Frankivsk Oblast, Ukraine. As a young woman, she was taken from her village and forced to work in Germany during World War II. After the war, Maria lived in a displaced persons camp where she met and married Mychajlo. In 1950, they immigrated to Canada and worked hard to build a better life for their family. Maria was a loving and caring wife, mother and baba. She took great interest and pride in the activities and accomplishments of her children and grandchildren, and shared with them her love for her Ukrainian heritage and Christian faith. She was always ready to help them in any way she could. Family gatherings brought her great enjoyment. In addition to working at various jobs, Maria lovingly tended to her vegetable and flower gardens, and enjoyed cooking, canning and baking. She had a gift for crocheting, knitting, and needle work, and was happy to produce many beautiful items. In later years, together with Mychajlo, she took numerous trips, including a special visit to Ukraine to be reunited with family members. She was a long time parishioner of St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church, where she was an active member of the UCWLC and the Seniors Club. We are extremely grateful for the compassionate care provided over the past eight years by the staff at Holy Family Home, especially Baba's “sweeties” on 4A, and by Drs Terry and Andrea Babick. We also thank the SSMI and HFH Auxiliary for their ongoing efforts to make Holy Family Home such a special place. Funeral Divine Liturgy will be held at St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 250 Jefferson Avenue, at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, January 16, Fr. Bohdan Lukie officiating. Interment will follow at All Saints' Cemetery. We miss you, we love you, we will always remember you.
