Obituary of MYRTLE ADELENE HORBAY

MYRTLE ADELENE HORBAY (neeYellowaga) It is with great sadness, that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, aunt and sister, Myrtle (Myroslava) Adelene Horbay on Monday, May 21, 2012. After a courageous battle with cancer, she peacefully fell asleep in the arms of the Lord with her children by her side. Myrtle was born in Grandview, Manitoba, June 12, 1946. She was the second eldest of five girls. Growing up in a farming family, Myrtle learned the value of hard work and throughout her life applied this tremendous work ethic to each and every task she was presented with. Myrtle attended elementary and secondary school in Roblin, Manitoba. After completing post-secondary school courses, she worked at CKDM Radio in Dauphin. In 1967 Myrtle met her soul mate, Gerald Horbay, and they were married in 1968. They lived in Roblin until their move to Winnipeg in 1983. They were blessed to have shared 43 beautiful years of marriage. Myrtle began her career with Co-op in 1974 as Parkway Co-op’s Credit Manager. In 1983, she joined the credit department and was eventually promoted to Credit Manager until her retirement in 2011. Myrtle loved to entertain her family and other guests. Cooking was her passion and mom loved sharing her knowledge with her daughters. We were always in awe and also inspired by her amazing skills. Ukrainian dishes, soups, and ‘magazine perfect’ cheesecakes were her specialties and she would always ensure everyone’s favourite food was on the table. Myrtle had a deep respect for all that was Ukrainian and she took great pride in preparing traditional holiday meals. Myrtle was also a dedicated member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada. She served as a member of the Sisterhood and on various other committees. Myrtle was also a member of the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada and held numerous positions. Her unwavering faith helped her endure the most difficult moments of her illness with strength and courage. Above all, Myrtle cherished her family. She always wanted the very best for her children and grandchildren. In particular, she valued the importance of education and was so proud of her children’s and grandchildren’s successes. She was also blessed to have shared special bonds with her sisters. Her laughter would be heard around the house when she would talk on the phone with them. Left to cherish her memory are her children Orysia (Jim) Barnes, Michael Horbay, and Lesya Horbay, grandchildren Jordan and Summer Barnes, sisters Isabel (Albert) Watson, Ethel (Walter) Misko, Alice (Mike) Shenderevich, Gail (Dean) Chescu, sister and brother in-law Zenovia and Dr. Basil Zmiyiwsky, along with her many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Gerald, parents John and Annie Yellowaga, parents in-law Peter and Annie Horbay and brother in-law Taras Horbay. Prayer Service (Panachyda) will be held Thursday, May 24, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. and the Funeral Rite will be held Friday, May 25, 2012 at 10:00 a.m.; both services will be at the Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, 1175 Main Street, Winnipeg. Co-celebrants will be Very Rev. Archpriest Gregory Mielnik and Rev. Fr. Eugene Maxmiuk. We would like to sincerely thank the doctors, nurses and staff at CancerCare, HSC Women’s Hospital and Riverview Health Centre where Mom received exceptional care and tremendous compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice. "Vichnaya Pam’yat!"
