JEFFREY PAUL DUNN

Obituary of JEFFREY PAUL DUNN

JEFFREY PAUL DUNN It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, brother, uncle, godfather and friend Jeffrey Paul Dunn at the Grace Hospital on September 6th 2014. He passed to eternal life peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his family. He was predeceased by his father, John D’Arcy, and his mother, Patricia Mary Gracia. He will be lovingly remembered by his beloved wife Sonia, brother Christopher (Hilda), sister Catherine (Robert); nieces Lauren, Kathleen and Emily and nephews Christopher and James. He will be missed by his brother-in-law Stanley (Donna), and sisters-in-law, Natilie, Rosemary (Blair) and Mildred, as well as his niece Amber and many other nephews and nieces. Jeffrey was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1950 and attended St. Paul’s and Churchill High School and the University of Manitoba. Jeffrey was employed with the University of Manitoba Department of Dairy Science and Canada Post but spent the bulk of his career with Scott-Bathgate Ltd., retiring in 2012. Jeffrey was actively involved with his union; for over 20 years he acted as both a union steward and collective bargaining representative. He was a strong community activist for the marginalized and working poor, sitting on many boards and committees, including Resource Assistance for Youth (RAY). He was a member of the Neighborhood Watch Executive and past president of the Columbus Courts Board of Directors. Jeffrey’s faith was of the utmost importance to him. He was a lifetime member of St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church, volunteering in Eucharistic Ministry, Prison Ministry at Stony Mountain Penitentiary, Development and Peace, the Refugee Committee and Knights of Columbus. Only days before his death, Jeffrey was accepted as a secular member of the Third Order of St. Francis. A strong political activist, Jeffrey was most at home discussing and debating political issues with his family and friends. Jeffrey was an integral role model for his nephews and nieces, teaching them the importance of generosity, faith and social justice. Jeffrey was well loved by all for his kindness, humility and deep and abiding faith. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, no matter what the task. Jeffrey married the love of his life, Sonia, in 2010 and, together with her, exemplified the strength, commitment, humour and friendship of a devoted, loving marriage. They were deeply in love and had a very happy marriage. He will be very deeply missed. We love you. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Ignatius Church, 255 Stafford St. on Friday, September 19, 2014 at 1:00pm, private interment to follow. The family would like to especially thank the Grace Hospital nursing staff for their care and compassion during Jeffrey’s illness. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba.
