Obituary of SALLY GUYDA

SALLY GUYDA (nee TRONIAK) Mom was born in Rossdale, MB October 26, 1914 to Xenia (Eugenia) and Matthew (Michael) Troniak. She was predeceased by brothers John and Bernie; sisters Clara (Zaretski), Anne (Churko), and Carole (Maygard); stepsisters Mary (Zelych) and Rose (Miller); husband Joseph; son Ronald; and son-in-law Kent (Turner). She is survived by her children: Harvey (Pat) of Montreal, Brian (Marlene) of Winnipeg, and Janice (Keith Campbell) of Calgary; sisters Josie (Bodyk) and Jean (Grocholski) and many nieces and nephews. Mom bravely left Rossdale at 14 and went to Winnipeg to find work. Her first job was doing housekeeping and cooking in a doctor's home. At 18, she married Leon Joseph Guyda and they had 4 children. Her family was her life. She toiled long and hard, determined that they should succeed. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy: Darlene (Keddie), Darryl (Laura), Michael (Roland), Marley (Dan), Evan (Kelly), Ryan (Jennifer), Brett (Sara) and Dustin (Letitia). She is also survived by great-grandchildren Chad, K.J., Sarah, Christopher, Chloe, Linden, Bryn, Alice, and Maelle. Mom loved the preparation, presentation, and serving of food. She was Head Girl at the Fort Garry Hotel for 25 years, ensuring that banquets were successful. Mom did private catering for many years. Intelligent, friendly, and extremely creative in her career, her last job was at 88 years "young". She was a wonderful cook - her family was blessed with her gifts of food. She taught her grandchildren to cook the Polish foods they loved, Mom was also an avid sports fan, particularly of the Jets and the Bombers. She could readily provide you with all the team and players stats. And who does not own a piece or more of her beautiful knitting? Mom was a generous donor to Winnipeg hospitals and the NDP party. Former Premier Gary Doer once said of her, "She, at 94, has more political passion than all the young people put together." Mom loved hearing that! Mom was a wise, independent, generous, and loving person. In her later years, as her sight and hearing diminished, she drew her strength from her belief that God was with her. She was a long time member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church. She lived with physical challenges, yet met them head on with dignity, practicality, independence and a persevering spirit - a great example for her family and anyone who knew or met her. Special thanks to Drs. Chernetsky, Manusow, Drexler, Brodovsky for their care over the years. Her years at Villa Cabrini were made special by Chef Don and Ken. The family also thanks Home Care, Charleswood Personal Care Home, and the staff at 5 North, Grace Hospital and her friend Jeanette Dobbs for their many kindnesses to Mom. On her 95th birthday, Mom shared her advice for a long, happy life: "Do something for somebody, don’t hold a grudge, hide your pride, be kind, and smile." We will. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, August 15 at 1:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Interment to follow at Holy Ghost Cemetery. As Mom loved children, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Children's Hospital Foundation.
