He helped his family farm their land until he left to seek work in Winnipeg. In 1959, John and Mary met on a blind date and married shortly thereafter and quickly started their family. John was employed by the Province of Manitoba as a Correctional Officer at Headingley Correctional Centre for 36 years until his retirement in 1997. John loved being around his family, grandchildren and great-grandchild. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, making homemade sausage and spending time at the family homestead in Meleb. John was actively involved at the Holy Redeemer Church helping out with the fish fry, perogy making and Sunday morning mass. John also enjoyed being a Knights of Columbus member. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses from Concordia Hospital who helped care for John during the last six weeks of his life. God bless you all. A celebration of John’s life will take place on Saturday, June 7 at 11:00 a.m. at the Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church, 264 Donwood Drive (North Kildonan). In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in John’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Diabetes Association of Manitoba. Dad, you have left a huge hole in our hearts, but you are no longer suffering or in pain. We miss you and love you.
