Obituary of LEAH BLACKNER

LEAH BLACKNER (NEE STRECK) November 9, 1924– Rhein, SK April 24, 2014 – Winnipeg, MB Leah Blackner, 89, of Winnipeg, passed away April 24, 2014. She was born in Rhein, Saskatchewan November 9, 1924 to Jacob and Eva Streck. Leah married Joseph Schultz in 1955. After Joseph’s death in 1968, she married John Blackner in 1976. She is predeceased by parents Jacob and Eva, husbands Joseph Schultz and John Blackner; brothers Henry, Dave, Victor, Jack and Wilhelm; sisters Emily, Mary, Molly and Frieda. Leah will be remembered for her gift of hospitality. She loved gardening, feeding the birds in her back yard, and enjoyed fishing during cottage weekends. She is survived by children Brenda (Haydn) Waller of Calgary AB; Rodger (Gayle) Schultz of Arborg MB; step-daughter Gladys Molnar (Ralph) of Elkford BC; sister Eleanor Krenz (Adolph) of Winnipeg, MB and sister-in-law June Streck (Jack) of Yorkton, SK. She is also survived by grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Thanks to staff at Misericordia Interim Care, Winnipeg; Fisher Personal Care, Fisher Branch and Percy E. Moore Hospital, Hodgeson, MB for their care of Leah. Thanks also to the Mary Nisbet Auxilary for their help with preparing for Leah’s service. Special thanks to neighbor Daniel McConachy for all the help over the years. Donations in Leah’s memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald St, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6. A memorial service will be held Friday, May 2, 2014 at 1:30 PM at Kildonan Community Church 2373 Main Street Winnipeg, with Rev. Brenda Fraser officiating.
