Even though the year has gone by quickly our memories of Mr. Mathes haven't faded a bit. The snow is finally melting, the days are longer and the birds are chirping, all signs that spring is approaching, something Mr. Mathes cherished and looked forward to each year. His knowledge of local birds was something to be admired and a popular conversation starter. It's truly a sad thing that we'll have to enter another spring and summer without Mr. Mathes, but we know he's looking down on us and wishing us all a great time at the cottage and at the lake. We miss you deeply Mr. Mathes.

I was so terribly sad to hear the news of Robert's passing, and my heart goes out to Gloria and the family. Since Kim and my son, Lewis, fell in love, Kim's extended family has made me feel that I am an honorary member of that family. This warmth has been extremely important to me. Since first meeting him, I had become very fond of Robert. One particular event comes to mind, and reveals his warmth and generosity. At Lewis and Kim's wedding, a bunch of my college friends had come over to Winnipeg, and we had decided that after the ceremony we would go on some kind of trip into rural Manitoba. At Curt and Judy's party the day after the wedding, my old friend John had been talking to Robert about our amorphous plans, and Robert had immediately offered to take us out to the lake cottage. Madness! But terribly generous. So we went out and had the most wonderful time. On our last night there, the British contingent sat out on the rocks, amazed by the night sky and the cries of loons; Robert was in the cottage watching a vital Stanley Cup game. Halfway through the game, however, he abandoned the TV to come out and sit on the rocks with us. Robert gave up a hockey game to hang out with a bunch of ex-hippies! And, under the stars, the conversation became wide-ranging and profound. Without exaggeration, it was one of the best nights of my life. And now I'm crying. I think Robert had a good time with us lot, too. In fact, I know this because he told us. From me, and from all those Brits, I can only thank Robert for giving us that evening. Of course, Gloria and the children and their partners, and Judy and Curt, were all part of this experience, too. Such warmth! Gloria, Judy, my heart is with you and the family. Part of me will be in Winnipeg on Wednesday. I shall miss Robert. With great affection, Charlie

Edwin and I along with my daughter Morgan offer our deepest condolences to the Gloria and her family in the loss of Bob. Having worked with Gloria and Kelli I came to know the entire family, at large and on occasion in person. Gloria and Bob were extremely kind and generous to me and this will always stay with me. I always enjoyed G's stories about Bob, their children and grandchildren....they were sure to put a smile on your face. It is clearly evident that the Mathes Family is a family where joy, love and laughter are in abundance and shared with all whom they touch. It was also evident in Glori's stories that Bob was a good man, loving husband, father and grandfather. Our hearts are with you. Denise & Edwin Voetman & Morgan James

Bryan is one of very best friends and as such his family has been very welcoming and friendly and to see all you go through this loss breaks my heart. We came to know Mr. Mathes through his wonderful youngest son, Bryan, whom our Gosia married. Our lives have been, and will forever be enriched by the welcoming Mathes family. It was truly an honor to know Mr. Mathes. Every conversation, be it about birds, clothing, the textile business or painting was always interesting and informative. It takes a person of real talent to be able to distinguish so many different types of birds and beautifully paint them on canvas. Mr. Mathes was this person. The stories about the road trips he took while on the job were funny, insightful and an all-around pleasure to listen to. The way he was able to recall so many details about people, places and how business was done so many years ago was amazing. It was always fun to enjoy a drink with him at his cottage or in Kenora. We could tell that he loved to spend as much time as possible with his family at their cottage. He was so proud of his grandchildren and loved watching them swim and go boating. Watching the hummingbirds come to the special feeders was always a highlight for him. We will miss him dearly. Rest in peace Mr. Mathes.

When I heard this news, I was in shock. I remember finally meeting Bryan's dad at his and Margaret's wedding, after knowing them for three and a half years. He was wonderful, with great stories and a hearty laugh. I send my deepest condolences in this trying time.

It doesn't seem possible that Bob has left us. Bob gave me the courage and confidence to start my own business. That was the beginning of a wonderful 32 year friendship and ongoing business relationship. He was a steady rock in my life. An incredibly loyal, honest, trustworthy mentor. He made me laugh. He made me feel good to be around him. Bob was that very special person in my professional life. I owe a debt of gratitude to Bob. I have been truly blessed to know him. Goodbye my friend. Ed.
