Obituary of SHIRLEY (LEE) ANNE SHUM

SHIRLEY (LEE) ANNE SHUM, BSW, RPN (nee Wieler) March 1, 1944 to January 5, 2014 It is with immense sadness and grief to announce the unexpected passing of Shirley Anne Shum on January 5, 2014 at Concordia Hospital with her family by her side. Shirley was born in Winnipeg on March 1, 1944 to Anna and John Wieler. Although she left this world far too soon she spent her time living life to the fullest. Shirley was a beautiful, vibrant and outgoing woman who lived a varied and full life. She may have been tiny but she was fierce and was a confident, caring and strong person. It is some of these traits that made her so successful in her career as a Social Worker, in Oncology at Seven Oaks Hospital and Registered Psychiatric Nurse in the Emergency department at Concordia Hospital. During her years of dedicated service in these complex positions she touched the lives of hundreds of patients, lifting and mending their spirits. However, it was her unwavering love and constant support towards her family and friends that will never be forgotten and forever be missed. Shirley is survived by her loving husband Les, children Holly, Ryan and Michelle (Brodie), grandchildren Bret and Elise and brother Raymond (Loraine). In addition to her family and friends she will be missed by her beloved cats Zoey and Buddy. Shirley had an innate way at developing special bonds not only with humans but animals as well. It is because of this that the family request that in lieu of flowers, donations to the Winnipeg Humane Society be made in her honor. The family would like to thank all the hospital staff at Concordia for their care, compassion and efforts during the last few days of her life. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2014 10am at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. Shirley loved to travel and see the world, her favorite destination being Hawaii. As she wished, her ashes will be taken there to be cast into the warm, turquoise waters by her family. Makuahine, aloha mau wau ia’ oe (Mom, we will love you always).
