MARGARET GOTTFRIED

Obituary of MARGARET GOTTFRIED

MARGARET GOTTFRIED 1917 - 2013 After a long and full life, Margaret Gottfried died peacefully on December 24, 2013 at her home, Fred Douglas Lodge. Born in Berlo, Manitoba on September 26th, 1917, Margaret was the tenth child in a family of fourteen. Her parents, Michael and Rosalia Gottfried were one of the pioneer families of Berlo and Margaret was fiercely proud of her family heritage in the Berlo, Meleb and Camp Morton area. Besides her parents, Margaret was predeceased by her siblings Elizabeth (Schreyer), Mary (Pfiefer), Veronica (Sales) John Gottfried, Katherine (Marks), Anne (Franz), Eva (Marks), Louise (Schnerch) and Michael Gottfried. Left to mourn her passing are her sisters Rose (Rostek) and Lena (Kunz), brothers Adam Gottfried, Joseph Gottfried and sister-in-law Rene. Also left to mourn her passing and cherish her memory are many, many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews as well as her dear friend Sandra. Margaret did not have children but made all the children of her brothers and sisters her own, taking great pride in all of their accomplishments. She generously shared her time, interests and resources with all of them, teaching them to fish, play cards, and generally enjoy life. She was always welcomed into their homes to share a meal, have a hand of crib and get to know the next generation of little ones. Margaret kept a notebook of all the names of her parents descendants and proudly entered each new birth. An avid sports fan, Margaret faithfully supported the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and won many curling and bowling trophies which she proudly displayed. Margaret’s work life centered around service to others and reached as far as Toronto and Red Lake Ontario, New York, Seattle and Florida. She retired as a family care provider in Winnipeg in the summer of 1982. On that special occasion her nephews and nieces hosted a celebration and declared July 17, 1982 “Auntie Margaret Day”. Margaret happily spent the last two and a half years of her life at Fred Douglas Lodge and her family is very grateful to the staff for their care and many kindnesses to Margaret. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Alphonsus Church, corner of Munroe and Brazier at 11:00am on Monday, December 30, 2013. Viewing will commence at 10:30 am.
