Obituary of LUCY VERONICA BRADLEY

LUCY VERONICA BRADLEY (Nee McCARTHY) July 20, 1926 – April 5, 2012 It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Lucy Veronica Bradley, aged 85 on April 5, 2012 at Fred Douglas Lodge. She is survived by her loving husband, Fred, of 64 years; her daughters Mary-Lou and Bonnie (John); grandchildren Trent, Derek and Kristin (Corey), Cory (Keri), Kelly and Dustin (Courtney); and great-grandchildren Isabelle, Marisa, Eric, Tyler and MacKenzie. Lucy was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on July 20, 1926 to Mary and Sylvester McCarthy. She attended St. Mary’s Academy and Gordon Bell High School in Winnipeg, then joined the army in the Second World War. She met her future husband, Fred, while working at the Manitoba Bus Terminal. They married on September 27, 1947 and had their daughters shortly after. Lucy was a lifetime member of the Sir Sam Steele Legion and an active member of the St. John’s United Church Women. She particularly loved singing in the choir at church. She was always the life of the party. Lucy loved dressing up in costume and writing her own humourous poems. She put together many hilarious fashion shows during her many years working at Kmart. She enjoyed curling, golf, painting, reading, travelling, cooking and baking. She was particularly known for her jam cookies, which everyone received on their birthday. The list of cookie recipients grew over the years, as everyone who heard of the tradition wanted to be part of it once they tasted the cookies. Lucy’s greatest love was her family. She was always there when needed, loving, caring and generous. Family times spent at Boulder Bay were always special to Lucy. She loved the cottage that she and Fred built there. Upon retirement she and Fred purchased a home in Florence, Arizona and spent their winters down south. Lucy made friends easily everywhere she went. Everyone who was touched by Lucy in this life was blessed by her compassion, warmth, sense of fun and laughter. Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to the nursing staff of the Willow wing at Fred Douglas Lodge. Their care of both Lucy and her family, especially in her last days, was appreciated more than words can say. A celebration of Lucy’s life will be held at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Manitoba Lung Association.
