Obituary of Jean Yarwood

Jean Elizabeth Yarwood (nee Savage) November 9, 1918 - April 20, 2011 Jean died peacefully in her sleep on April 20, 2011 at Maples Personal Care Home in Winnipeg. Jean was born in Brandon Manitoba on November 9, 1918, the third child of the Reverend James and Jean Elizabeth Savage. She was predeceased by her parents, her sister Doris Gagne, brothers Gordon and Earl Savage, her husband Frank, and daughter Helen Burchnall, her foster parents, Harry and Sarah Findlay and her foster sisters, Jean Booth and Doris Hamilton. She is survived by her daughter, Frances Kaltsikes (Pantouses), Athens, Greece, her grandsons Alexander Kondra (Janette), Athabasca and Andrew Kondra (Joy), Calgary her granddaughter Eleni Kaltsiki (Kalli Gibson),London, England, her great-grandson Pantousis-Martin, and her nieces and nephews. Her interest in education and learning led her to resume her studies after marriage when she attended Normal School and began teaching. She obtained her B.A. in 1963 and her B.Ed. in 1964 from the University of Manitoba. Her teaching career began in St James at Linwood School and St. James Collegiate and concluded in St Vital at Dakota Collegiate where she was guidance counselor and then librarian until her retirement in 1983. After retirement she remained active, doing volunteer work for the Canadian Cancer Society, teaching English to new Canadians, attending concerts, theatre and the ballet, walking, swimming and skiing. Her many and varied interests included travelling, photography, gourmet cooking, gardening, sewing and handicrafts. She travelled extensively in Canada and the USA as well as to Europe, Australia, New Zealand, south-east Asia, and South America. Her travels gave her the added opportunity to indulge in her hobby of photography. She loved animals and was usually accompanied on her Canadian trips by her faithful dog, Lady. Cremation has taken place and interment will be in Brandon Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at 3p.m.on Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at DeLucas, 950 Portage Ave.
