Norman Wensel

Obituary of Norman Wensel

NORMAN WENSEL It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather on November 7, 2010 at the Grace Hospital. Left to cherish his memory is wife Helen his lifetime soul-mate and best friend, son Gary (Joann), daughter Wendy (Ross) Marsch, granddaughters Kerry Porter and Marla (Andrew) Hughesman, the latest "light of his life" great granddaughter Jaina Marie, sister Lorraine (Emil) Hedman and numerous nieces and nephews. Norman was predeceased by his parents Adolf and Emilie, sisters Gertie, Ruby, Hettie and brother Wilfred. Norm was born in Winnipeg on September 5, 1921 and raised in Weston. After completing his education at Cecil Rhodes and Daniel McIntyre schools he enlisted with the Royal Canadian Navy serving overseas in the North Atlantic. Upon his return he married the love of his life Helen on October 13, 1945, recently celebrating their 65th anniversary. Norm resumed his job at Dominion Bridge and retired as foreman of the welding shop after 38 years of dedicated service. Norm was an avid golfer and accomplished a " hole in one" of which he was very proud. Over the years Norm bowled in many leagues both 5 pin and 10, travelling to many tournaments down south and one year winning the City of Winnipeg doubles championship with his son Gary. He loved to get out fishing whenever he could. He supported the Winnipeg Jets and was very sad to see them leave Winnipeg. In later years he attended Winnipeg Goldeyes games with wife Helen and son and daughter-in-law Gary and Joann. Norm enjoyed life and was always ready to lend a helping hand. Along with his brother and brothers-in-law they helped each other build their own homes in Weston. He had a keen sense of humour and was the life of the party fondly known as Stormin Norman. Spending time with his family and friends brought him much joy, as did the extensive travelling he and Helen did with family and friends. We will truly miss his quick sense of humour, his kind and caring ways, his gentle heart, and his love. The family would like to thank Dr. Borrett for his compassionate care and guidance. Nurses Lucy H, Janice G, Barb, and Louise for their exemplary care and compassion both to Norm and his family in his final hours. Also thank you to all of the staff of the Grace Hospital 3rd floor south. Cremation has taken place and in accordance with Norm's wishes a private family service will take place at a later date with niece Charlette Novak officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Norm's memory to Winnipeg Cosmopolitan Foundation (for diabetes research) mail to care of Gary Wensel, 55 McNulty Cove, Winnipeg R2M 5H5 or to The Never Alone Foundation (Cancer Support Services) 51064 RPO Tyndall Park, Winnipeg R2X 3C6 Cropo Funeral Chapel 586-8044
