Obituary of ELIZABETH HANDKAMER
ELIZABETH HANDKAMER
March 19, 1928 – March 22, 2012
With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Elizabeth Handkamer on March 22 at St. Boniface Hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Elizabeth leaves behind her loving husband of 58 years – Charles (her angel), son Craig and his wife Barb, grandsons Anthony and Neal, brother Ed Kozar (Verna), and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her father Harry Kozar, mother Jesse Shewchuk, stepfather Harry Shewchuk, sister Minnie Balak, sister Helen Perdue, brother Morris Kozar and brother Stan Kozar.
Elizabeth was born in Grandview, MB in 1928 where she grew up and attended school. She moved to Montreal and worked at Dorval Airport for a brief period and then moved to Winnipeg where she met Charles and the two were wed in 1954. They bought a house on Atlantic Ave. and spent many happy years there where she honed her skills at ceramics, upholstery, needlepoint and gardening. She was employed part time in the China Department of Eaton’s and made many long-lasting friendships with her co-workers. In later years, Elizabeth and Charles enjoyed travelling to several parts of the world through flying, cruise ships and bus trips. When her husband was institutionalized with Alzheimer’s, Elizabeth visited him almost every day rain or shine, even while her own health was failing. She was permanently hospitalized in December.
The family would like to thank Dr. Lotocki, Dr. Popowich, Dr. Dean, Dr. Summer and the staff of CancerCare, and also the caring and loving staff of the Antepartum and Gynecology Ward at St. Boniface Hospital who went out of their way to make the last few months of her life comfortable.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 28 at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street, Pastor Lynne Hutchison presiding. Interment at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba.
