Obituary of Mary SULAVELLA

MARY SULAVELLA Peacefully passed away at the Golden Links Lodge on August 27, 2009 at the age of 94. Our Mom & Baba is survived by daughter Donna Elvers and Gordon, and grandson Thomas; also grandson Jason Murdoch, sister Annie Kowal, brother-in-law Nick Sulavella and Eveline, and numerous cousins, nephews, nieces and their families. She was predeceased by her husband Joseph, son Bruce, brother Walter Verby, and sister Jean Wensel. Born, raised, and a long term resident of the Weston area of Winnipeg, Mom spent a lot of time in Ukrainian dance, singing and acting at the Taras Shevchenko Ukrainian Club. As an adult, she worked at Burn's Meats until family came along, and then took on the role of stay at home Mom. She was also an active member of the Brooklands Ukrainian Ladies Club, which later became the Brooklands Pioneer Senior Citizens Club. She enjoyed the social contact that kept her attending on a regular basis. Family outings included trips to the beach at Twin Lakes every Sunday for many years. After her parents were no longer able, Mom took on the role of the hostess for family Christmas gatherings, a role she enjoyed immensely. Mom was a great cook. She loved cooking up family meals, perogies, borscht, and other Ukrainian specialties were abundant. No one ever went home hungry. Mom liked a good story, whether telling it herself, or enjoying someone else's telling. She also enjoyed a good joke, loved singing, and music, and the comfort of family and friends. She also took great pride in her rose garden. After independent living was no longer possible, Mom was a 7 year resident of the Rosewood Village assisted living facility, until she made her move to the Golden Links Lodge where she spent her final years. Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, September 1 at 11:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Interment will follow at Brookside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to the Arthritis Society, or the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.
