Obituary of Paul Sorby

Paul Sorby Peacefully, in the wee hours of Monday, April 6th, 2009 at Seven Oaks Hospital our Dad and Grandpa, Paul Sorby, quietly slipped away with his daughter Janice and grandson Jeff by his side. Dad was born in Winnipeg on March 27th, 1915 and lived his entire life in Brooklands. He worked for many years at Burns Foods, retiring in 1978.Dad was always a determined "fighter" in almost everything he did and was a true "survivor", always being able to "bounce back", even after several "upsets" that life dealt him. He, quite often, displayed a "rough" exterior but underneath was a truly soft heart. In spite of his years his stamina was amazing and he loved his drink and cigs right to the end .. Dad enjoyed being around people and especially loved his years at Idle wheels Campground at Husavik. For many years he could be seen "people watching" at Polo Park and could also be caught catching forty winks on one of the benches. Paul is survived by his daughter Janice Solilak and grandson Jeff Solilak of Wpg., grandson Gary Solilak of Edmonton, son Paul and daughter-in-law Donna, brother-in-law Arthur Lounsbury of Wpg, sister and brother-in-law Audrey and Al MacDonald of Truro, N.S. and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by our Mom and Grandma Ramona on Feb 20, 1989 after forty years of marriage, his daughter Elaine Walker 1986, his grandson Kenneth Sorby 1983, his parents Dmetro 1948 and Maude 1971, his brothers Michael 1946 and William 1987, and sister Jessie Prokoppa 1990 and his first wife Hilda 1944 .. A special thank you to the staff in the Emergency at Seven Oaks Hospital and the staff on the 5th floor for making Dad as comfortable as possible in his last hours. Also, a huge thank you to all the home care workers, especially Crystal and Gwen and nurse Brian who treated Dad with the utmost kindness, respect, and consideration. Dad made some special friends throughout the years; life long friends Cay and Bob (dec) McKelvey and their family, Steve and Ruth O'Gorman, Murray and Edna Brown and their family, and Stan (dec) and Anne Palmer and many others who crossed his path. Thank you to all his friends at Bluebird Lodge where Dad resided these past 6 years, for your help, support, and understanding. There will be an empty seat now in the main floor sitting area where he could always be found watching the traffic. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, April 13 at 11:30 a.m. at Bluebird Lodge, 97 Keewatin St. Dad, you fought a long battle and now it is time to rest. Flowers gratefully declined.
