Obituary of Alexander Shymchyk

Alexander (Alex) Shymchyk Unexpectedly, on Sunday, February 1, 2009, Alexander Shymchyk peacefully passed away at the age of 84 years. Born April 20, 1924 in Zapole, Belarus, Alexander escaped the war at age 17, and spent many years in Europe before immigrating to Canada. Alex was a very hardworking family man who took great pride in providing for his family. He encouraged his children to succeed and was very proud of their accomplishments. He cherished his time with his youngest daughter Stacey, and was very proud of his son Michael, a medical physician in Calgary, his daughter Vera, C.F.A. and mother to the light of his life, grandson Brayden. After undergoing successful heart surgery in June 2008, he treasured his time at home with his beloved wife Zoya, daughter Stacey, and was eagerly looking forward to his favorite pastimes of family picnics in the backyard and spending time in the garden. Alex was an avid reader who loved to talk about current events, watch hockey and entertain friends, family and neighbors. It is with great sadness that we announce his passing but take solace in knowing that it was peaceful, at home and during a happy time in his life. Alex was a loving and compassionate husband, father, grandfather and brother. He will be forever remembered and missed by his wife Zoya, sister Vera in Belarus, son Michael (Sherry, and step-children Katrina, Eric, Darrel and Rachelle), daughters Vera (Rob) and Stacey. His laughter and playfulness will be dearly missed by his grandson Brayden. Alex was predeceased by his parents Ana and Michael, and brother John. The family would like to give special thanks to all the medical staff at St. Boniface General Hospital, Victoria General Hospital, Dr. Permack, Dr. Pascoe and all the homecare workers involved in Alex's care. Funeral Liturgy will be held on Friday, February 6 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church, 643 Manitoba Ave. with Rev. Fr. Stephan Savastian officiating. Interment to follow in St. Vital Cemetery. Those we love don't go away, They walk beside us every day, Unseen, unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed and very dear.
