Obituary of Alice Ptashnick

Alice Ptashnick With the ache of loss still in our hearts, we sadly announce the peaceful passing of Alice Ptashnick on the morning of December 27, 2010 at the Concordia Hospital. Mom, or "Gram" as she was affectionately known by her loving grandchildren: Carly (Oisin), Michelle (Brad), Symon (Meghan), Sable (Tyler), Victoria (Scott) and Janelle (Vedran), as well as her new great-granddaughter Mena, is survived by her sons Gord (Olga) and Randy (Lizette). Also left to mourn her is her sister Vicky Bourrie, whom has been a consistent source of love and support, as were her "adopted daughters" nieces Mildred (Rick) and Margaret. Mom was blessed to have many extended family members who offered their kindness and compassion over the years, especially as her diabetes and other health issues grew in their impact in recent months. Alice was predeceased by her husband Paul (1997), parents, and numerous siblings, cousins, nephews, and nieces. Mom's last month was a difficult one, beginning with sudden problems related to her diabetes that became more complex and severe as the weeks wore on. Ultimately the strain on her weakened immune system became too much. Spending most of the last month under the sensitive care of staff at Concordia Hospital, her family expected her to recover over time, and were planning for her supported return home. Family and friends knew Mom (and Dad) for their welcoming spirit, always willing to host guests for a meal, a night, or as long one wanted to stay. In Winnipeg, "Auntie Alice's" was always a place to visit and stay, and guests were always welcome. Mom's sense of humour and sharp wit, coupled with her gift for the telling of family stories, was a source of enjoyable entertainment, as well as history of family culture and tradition. The hours spent listening to her stories, especially by her grandchildren, will provide both, cherished memories and a sense of deep loss of stories that will never sound the same again. "Gram kept us fed and made us laugh." In accordance with Mom's wishes, cremation and a memorial service will be held on Friday, December 31, at 10:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel 1442 Main Street, with interment to follow at All Saint's Cemetery. For family who are unable to make travel arrangements at this time of year to attend her memorial, a family celebration in the spirit of her memory, will honour her on her birth date, July 15, 2011 hosted by her sons. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Mom's name may be made to the C.N.I.B., the Canadian Diabetes Association, or the Concordia Hospital Foundation. Cropo Funeral Chapel 586-8044
