Obituary of Ivan Pochylczuk
Ivan Pochylczuk 1923-2010 It is with sadness that we announce to the Ukrainian Community that on January 26, 2010 the faithful servant of God, Ivan fell asleep in the Lord at Holy Family Home. Ivan was born on April 6, 1923 in the village of Stovpets in the Dubensky Region of Volyn, Ukraine. He was born to the very deeply religious family of Theodosius and Paraskeva Pochylczuk. After completing his early schooling, he went on to study at the Agricultural Institute in Kyiv. His education was cut due to the out break of the Second World War. During the war years his life was very difficult as it was with many of the youth of that time. During the German occupation he became a member of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). In 1944 he left Ukraine and spent time in Austria, Yugoslavia, Italy and England. In 1959 he came to Canada and studied at St. Andrew's College in Winnipeg, MB. From 1963 to 1972, he was appointed as the personal secretary to Metropolitan Ilarion (Ohienko). As well, during these years he was active in the Ukrainian Community. He was a member of the Volyn Institute, the Friends of Volyn Society often acting as the liaison between this Society and Metropolitan Ilarion (an honourary member of the Society), when the Society published many of the works of Metropolitan Ilarion. Ivan was a gifted Cantor and among his duties, was a Cantor for the Winnipeg parishes of St. Mary the Protectress Sobor and St. Ivan Suchavsky Sobor. He leaves to mourn his passing his family in Ukraine, brother Ananias, niece Luba and nephew Volodymyr. Great nieces and nephews Ihor, Alla, Valeriy and Anatoliy. In Canada, Andrew and Claudia Serray and the Ukrainian Orthodox church family of Winnipeg. Deep and sincere gratitude is extended to the staff and volunteers of Holy Family Home for providing Ivan with a dignified life during his final year. Funeral prayers will be held at St. Ivan Suchavsky Sobor, 939 Main St. on Thursday, February 18 at 7:00pm. Funeral rite will be served at St. Ivan Suchavsky Sobor on Friday, February 19 at 9:30am. Interment to follow at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. Reverend Father Alexander Harkavyi to officiate.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Ivan Suchavsky Sobor or the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada.
