Obituary of Olga Pekarsky
OLGA PEKARSKY
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear wife, mother, Baba, sister and friend, Olga Pekarsky (nee Hrechkosy), on July 18, 2010, with her family by her side.
Olga will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her husband of 47 years, Onufrey, daughters Anna (Michael) Shymanski, Patti, grandsons Nicholas and Andrew Shymanski, sisters Lillian Pickering, and Frances (Arthur) Winkler, sister-in-law Jean Hrechkosy and her many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Olga was predeceased by her parents, Samuel and Anna Hrechkosy, sister Mary (Michael) Zydyk, and brothers Mike (Jessie), John (Vera), Peter, Paul (Shirley) and Bill (Marion) and her first grandson, Eric Shymanski.
Olga was born on January 26, 1928, and spent her entire life in Winnipeg. She was an avid sportswoman, having a special affinity for bowling and softball. A member of the St. Vital Tigerettes during the team's heyday, Olga and her teammates were inducted into the Manitoba Softball Hall of Fame in 2004. In later years she enjoyed carpet bowling with the North Centennial Seniors Club.
She made many lifelong friends while working first at Eatons, and then at the Canadian Wheat Board. She married her husband Onufrey in 1962, and they raised their two daughters in West Kildonan.
Olga loved spending time with family and friends, and her door was always open to visitors. She enjoyed reading, playing cards and singing. Baba was a wonderful baker, and her chocolate chip cookies, cakes and muffins were sent in steady supply to her grandsons. Sunday dinners were a family tradition.
Olga was dedicated to her family, offering guidance and support when needed. She will always be remembered for her devotion to those she loved, and her kindness and generosity. Her positive attitude lifted us all.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the doctors and staff of the Women's Hospital at HSC Ward WRS5, for their care and compassion.
Prayers will be said on Thursday July 22 at 7:30 pm at Cropo Funeral Chapel. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00 am Friday July 23 at St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 250 Jefferson Ave. with Father Frank Szadiak officiating. Interment to follow at All Saints Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Olga's memory to the Bishop Velychkovsky Martyr's Shrine, 250 Jefferson Ave. Wpg. or to CancerCare Manitoba.
