Obituary of GERALD HORBAY
Gerald Peter Horbay
It is with deep sorrow that we wish to announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and brother, Gerald (Yaroslav) Horbay, on Sunday, February 26, 2012.
Gerald was born in Roblin, MB on August 22,1943. As a young man, he excelled in sports, particularly basketball and track and field, where he represented the town in regional events. Gerald started his working life with the Roblin Co-op and then moved on to Robinson Little & Company. In 1983, Gerald was promoted, and with his family moved to Winnipeg. Gerald enjoyed his career in sales which also included SAAN Stores, The Winnipeg Sun, Tip Top Tailors and finally Moore’s Clothing for Men. He was well respected among his coworkers and he made many friends through his excellent salesmanship. In the fall of 1999, Gerald had to leave his working life due to the complications that arose from his battle with diabetes.
Gerald was a devout member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada. His unwavering faith carried him through any difficult time and he also thanked God for all the blessings that he received. Every day Gerald said his morning and evening prayers as was taught to him by his parents; he instilled these same values in his children.
Gerald was an avid sports fan and closely followed football, hockey, and baseball. His favorite team was the Toronto Blue Jays. As well, Gerald always looked forward to having weekly coffee with his friends.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 43 years Myrtle (Myroslava) Horbay, children Orysia (Jim) Barnes, Michael and Lesya Horbay; grandchildren Jordan and Summer Barnes and sister Zenovia (Dr.Basil) Zmiyiwsky, along with his many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Peter, mother Annie and brother Taras.
Prayer Service (Panachyda) will be held Thursday, March 1, 2012 at 7:00pm and the Funeral Service will be held Friday, March 2, 2012 at 10:00am; both services will be at the Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, 1175 Main Street, Winnipeg.
