Obituary of Mary MOZEL

MARY AGNES MOZEL 1914 - 2010 Peacefully on Tuesday, September 21, 2010, Mary Agnes Mozel passed away at Bethania Personal Care Home in Winnipeg at the age of 96. Mary was born August 27, 1914 in Winnipeg, MB and lived all her life in East Kildonan. Mary became a school teacher upon graduating from Normal School in 1934. Her first assignment was in Little Grand Rapids, arriving by boat on the SS Kenora. Her two years in Little Grand Rapids were one of the highlights of her teaching career. Mary taught in Winnipeg at Prince Edward School, Sisler and Elmwood High Schools, teaching Geography and Phys.Ed. Mary furthered her education by obtaining her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Manitoba. She retired from Winnipeg School Division No. 1 after a career span of 35 years. Mary thoroughly enjoyed many years living in the company of her mother, Catherine, who passed away in 1992 at the remarkable age of 104. In the 1970s, Mary built a cottage at Lakeshore Heights in the Grand Beach area. The cottage became the centre of Mary's life where she and family enjoyed many good times and many beautiful Lake Winnipeg sunsets. Most importantly to Mary, she formed many life-long friendships from Lakeshore Heights and Victoria Beach. Mary was always very active in sports, enjoying speedskating, women's hockey and softball in her youth. During her teaching years she spent much time bowling and curling and especially enjoyed golfing at Rossmere Country Club. Mary will be greatly missed by her sister Nellie Hanel, nephews Gordon Mozell (Donna) and Tom Hanel (Jennifer), great-nephews Chris Mozell (Katie), Devon Hanel and Kurt Hanel, and many other relatives and friends. Mary was predeceased by her brother Joe in 2005, mother Catherine in 1992, brother Bill in 1988, nephew Jeff Hanel in 1986, nephew Jack Mozell in 1966, and father John Mozel in 1959. Many thanks to the staff at Bethania Personal Care Home, especially the North Wing, for the care and attention given to Mary for eight years of her life. Throughout her many years in care, Mary was grateful for the unfailing devotion of her sister, Nellie. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 29 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church, 341 Munroe Ave. at Brazier, East Kildonan. Refreshments will be served at St. Alphonsus Hall immediately after the church service. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 10-120 Donald St. Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2.
