Obituary of DORA OSTERBECK

DORA OSTERBECK June 21, 1925 – February 22, 2012 Dora was born in Stoughton, SK. She attended school in Benson, Regina, and Arcola, SK. She went to Normal School in Regina and Moosejaw to become a teacher. Upon completion she taught for three years before finally going to teach at Braeside School where she met the love of her life, Clayton Osterbeck. They met at a dance in Antler, SK in 1946 and within a year they were married. The wedding took place on June 28, 1947. Dancing continued to be a favored activity throughout their lives. Despite many adversities our parents raised 6 happy and healthy children. She continued teaching until her retirement at the age of 55. She and Dad then spent their golden years traveling, fishing, playing cards, and gardening. In addition, Mom was involved in many different organizations and committees – U.C.W., I.T.C., and Royal Purple to name a few. Mom spent many hours knitting, crocheting, and sewing. Her hands were never still. Her baby quilts are scattered throughout North America. They were never for sale but were given from the heart. She also spent many hours knitting for people she knew, family, friends and many charities. Dora continued to be an extremely intelligent woman until she was hospitalized. She could play "Jeopardy" with the best of them. She became indignant if people made the assumption that she was incapable because of her age and let her feelings be known as only mom could. In addition to being a wife, mother of 6, grandmother of 13 and nana of 8, she had many extended family members who loved and respected her. She touched the hearts of neighbors, friends, and countless former students. Her memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved her. The family would like to acknowledge our sister Carol and brother Merle for their devotion and tender care of our parents. Carol was faithful to her promise to Dad that she would look after Mom until the end. Thank you to the staff at Seven Oaks Hospital for their gentle care and support. Mom has been cremated and her ashes will be buried beside her husband’s in Nassau, MB. A Memorial Service will take place during the long weekend in May. In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to do so can make a donation to the Salvation Army, CancerCare, or MADD. A mother is the warmth and security you will always remember, the caring friendship you will always treasure, and the memories that will live in your heart forever.
