Obituary of Audrey Mateush (Baldwin)

AUDREY PHYLLIS MATEUSH (Baldwin) January 26, 1935 - May 3, 2010 It is with deep sorrow that her family announces the passing of Audrey Phyllis Mateush on Monday May 3, 2010. Leaving to mourn her loss are; her loving husband of 22 years, Steve Mateush, her three children; Scott (Alice), Clark (Carolyn) and Dianne (Ernie), and her five grandchildren; Kirby, Myles, Justin, Molly and Kaitlin. Also mourning her loss are her brothers and sisters; Ed, Dennis, Evelyn, Elsie and Percy, numerous nieces and nephews, and her stepchildren; Diane (Terry), Derek, Darci, Donna, and David (Maureen) as well as the Zealand family. Audrey was born in Cyprus River to John and Gladys Marten and grew up on the farm. She attended high school in Glenboro and moved to Winnipeg as a young adult. Audrey devoted herself to raising her three children for a number of years before embarking on a 30-year career as a successful real estate agent and broker. Integrity was important to Audrey and that was how she approached her real estate career, making a lasting impression on clients and colleagues alike. Third generation referrals from the children and grandchildren of former clients were not uncommon. Ensuring the right deal for a customer was more important to her than earning a higher commission from another property. Audrey served for a number of years as an arbitrator on the ethics committee of the Winnipeg Real Estate Board. Audrey was always a passionate supporter of the underdog and she never failed to see the upside in people who deserved a second chance. She valued continuous learning and education, self-taught or otherwise. Audrey was a creative and artistic person who approached life with a quirky sense of fun. She loved to read long biographies, do crossword puzzles with Steve, watch Coronation Street, and go to Goldeyes games, but most of all she loved to spend time with her grandchildren. Steve will miss the long trips that gave them the opportunity to laugh and talk together for hours on end. He fondly remembers one drive from Victoria to Winnipeg when they did not turn on the radio until they reached Brandon and were almost home. Funeral service will be held at the Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street, on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 11:00 am with interment at All Saints Cemetery afterward. A reception will follow. Viewing will be on Friday, May 7 at 7:00 pm also at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Audrey's memory to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. www.cbcf.org
