Obituary of Duane MANWARING

DUANE MANWARING On April 1st, 2009, Duane Manwaring, father and friend, unexpectedly passed away at the age of 46 at the HSC. He was predeceased by his parents, Judge Francis Manwaring and Margaret Manwaring, his sister Sally, and his spouse Jo-Anne King. He is survived by his daughter Natasha Ateah, and by his many friends. Duane was born on November 22nd, 1962, and grew up in Dauphin before moving to Winnipeg in his midteens. Duane's appreciation for good company, music, and food led him to pursue a career in the nightclub industry. He eventually opened his own club, The Blue Note, which he managed with Jo-Anne, giving his friends and clients the opportunity to share in his enthusiasm. He later switched careers and joined CAA, becoming one of the top Emergency Roadside Service Drivers, earning the respect and admiration of his peers. There was no task he couldn't accomplish once he set out: he was a self-taught guitarist and pianist from his youth and his love and knowledge of music was formidable and eclectic, ranging from classical symphonies to punk rock. He was also an avid reader and could hold his own in any conversation, often providing the essential phrase that perfectly summed up the situation. And there were no sacred cows to Duane. It is hard to imagine Duane without a cup of coffee, a good book, some interesting music, and his guitar. He loved to travel, especially in the southern States, Mexico and Central America. In later years, he became an accomplished canoeist and navigator, paddling with friends, or soloing, across much of Western Canada. Indeed, he was often happiest on the water, or when consulting his maps as he planned his next voyage. We who knew him were honoured: he was strength, dignity, determination, laughter, and loyalty. In respect with his wishes, Duane will be cremated and his ashes will be reunited with Jo-Anne in the ocean near Tofino in BC. No service is planned, but a viewing will be held at Cropo Funeral Chapel at 1442 Main Street on Saturday, April 4th, at 3:00 pm. "The winds and waves are always on the side of the ablest navigators.
