Obituary of Dorothy KOZAK

DOROTHY (DOT) KOZAK Passed away peacefully at Kildonan Personal Care Centre on Sunday, June 14, 2009 at the age of 77. Dorothy was born in Winnipeg on April 17, 1932 to John and Lena (Belinsky) Kozak. Her parents predeceased her and she leaves to mourn her passing, many cousins, aunts and uncles in Canada and the USA. Since Dorothy had no siblings, she referred to her cousin Elizabeth Zoochkan as "my sister Betty". Dorothy worked for the Winnipeg Police (Traffic Dept.), Great West Life (Wpg.) and her final 25 years of employment were with the Federal Gov't (Services and Supply) in Ottawa. Dorothy was an outstanding Canadian athlete. Some of her accomplishments included: 1953 - she won the J.B. McBryde Rose Bowl for best female athlete (MB), she came 1st in the 100 yd. Sprint, Broad Jump, Discus and Ball Throw at the Scottish Amateur Athletic 47th Annual Games, 1953 - won the 220 yd Sprint at the C.N.E. Toronto International Track and Field Meet, 1954 - was a member of the Canadian Ladies Relay Team that won a Bronze Medal for Canada at the British Empire Games, 1956 - Dorothy broke the Canadian Record for the Ladies Broad Jump at Hamilton, ON, 1956 - she was a member of the Women's Canadian Olympic Relay Team that was held in Melbourne, Australia, although they did not win a medal they did break a Canadian record. Dorothy fell in love with Australia and stayed on for another 18 months, worked and continued her training there. Prior to the Olympics, Dorothy had moved to Calgary to train for the Olympics and that year (1956) won the A. R. Lawrence medal for Alberta's outstanding female athlete of the year. Dorothy was a long time member of the C.U.A.C. Ladies Baseball Team. In 1966 at the Manitoba Five Pin Bowling Association, she won "A" Singles with a 970 score. After her track and field days were over, she took up golfing, which she enjoyed very much and in 1964 fired a "hole-in-one" at St. Boniface Golf Course. We, the family, wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to the staff at Kildonan Personal Care Centre for their kindness and exceptional care they gave Dorothy. She really enjoyed living there for the past seven years and until recently participated in all their activities and outings. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held on Monday, June 22 at 1:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. with Rev. Edna Perry officiating. Private family interment will take place at a later date. Flowers gratefully declined.
