Peter A. Kondra PhD, Professor Emeritus 1911 - 2011 With deep sadness the family announces the peaceful passing of Peter Alexander Kondra on July 22, 2011. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 71 years, Rozalia (Zubrak) of Winnipeg, son Zenon (MaryJane) of Carstairs, grandsons Alex (Janette) of Athabasca AB and Andrew of Calgary; daughter Marusia (Robert) Foster, granddaughters Lorraine and Catherine (Jeff) Anderson of Winnipeg and Carolyn of Toronto; son Peter M. (Marilyn), grandsons Roman, Mykola and Michael of Stoney Creek ON; sister Antonia Kopelchuk of Canora SK and her family; brother Kazimer of Swan River MB and his family; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Peter was predeceased by his parents Oleksa and Evdokia (Dyda) pioneer farmers in Mazeppa SK, sister Anne (Saffron) Derkach of Canora SK; brother Mike (Jenny) of Kamsack SK, sisters Mary (John) Matieshin of Grandview MB; Julia (Dmytro) Tymrick of Canora SK, Margaret (Sam) Kravinchuk of Edmonton, Stella (Paul) Shushkevich of Winnipeg, Helen (Mike) Koshelka of Grandview MB and sister-in-law Nellie Kondra of Swan River MB and brother-in-law Peter Kopelchuk of Donwell SK. Peter was one of ten children born on the family homestead in Mazeppa where he attended elementary school and later attended High School at Yorkton Collegiate before completing his BSA and MSC at the University of Manitoba. He completed his PhD in animal genetics at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Peter had a distinguished career as Professor of Animal Science and following retirement was Principal of St. Andrew's College at the University of Manitoba. Peter treasured his summers with his wife, children and grandchildren at the cottage on Eleanor Lake in the Whiteshell. He enjoyed diverse activities including building and maintaining the cottage, gardening, tending trees and picking blueberries. Peter continued to care for his wife Rose in their own home enjoying their independence until the end of his life. In 1964 Peter was invited by the by both the Soviet and Ukrainian Academy of Sciences to lecture in Russia and Ukraine and later to Czechoslovakia in 1976. In 1968-69 Peter along with Rose and Peter M. travelled to Khon Kaen Thailand as United Nations Columbo Plan advisor to assist in establishing a new university. Later Peter and Rose were posted on CESO assignments to Brazil and Costa Rica. Peter was deeply committed to serving his community including the Ukrainian Self Reliance League of Canada. He was Chairman of the building committees of the Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity and St. Andrew's College. He successfully chaired the affiliation of St. Andrew's College with the University of Manitoba establishing the Centre for Ukrainian Canadian Studies. He chaired the committee that reprinted the Ostroh Bible first written in 1581. Peter was National President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) 1971-74 and served as Co-chair of the Canadian Consultative Council on Multiculturalism 1972-78. Peter was a founding member of the Order of St. Andrew as well as National President. Peter received many honours including Honorary Doctorate from St. Andrew's College, Taras Shevchenko Medal, UCC Centennial Medal, Professor Emeritus and Distinguished Alumnus Award University of Manitoba and New Millennium Multicultural Award Province of Manitoba. Prayers will be said on July 26, 2011 at 7 pm and the funeral will be held on July 27, 2011 at 10:30 am both at Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, 1175 Main Street, Winnipeg with Very Reverend Father G. Mielnik officiating. Members of the Order of St. Andrew will provide an Honour Guard. Pall bearers will be Ron, Alex, Andrew, Roman, Mykola and Michael Kondra, William and Don Zubrack. Interment will be at Glen Eden Cemetery. The family wishes to thank Dr. G. Balko and staff of 6A St. Boniface Hospital for their care and support. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, St. Andrew's College or a charity of your choice. VICHNAYA PAMYAT
