Obituary of Joseph KARALASH

JOSEPH KARALASH It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our husband, father, and grandfather at the Health Science Centre on September 10, 2008 after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer. Left to cherish Joe's memory is his wife, Eleanor, and his children Darlene (Bruce Peto), Angela, Bruce, and Robert. Gigi will be lovingly remembered by his three grandchildren, Carly and Brittany Peto, and Gavin Karalash. Joe is also survived by brothers John Orobko (Verna), Mike Orobko (Doris), and Steve Orobko (Joan). Joe was predeceased by his mother, Mary (Romaniuk) Orobko, foster father, Dmytro Karalash, his sisters Stella Orobko, Anne Martin (Wilf), Olga Karalash (Frank), and his brother Walter Orobko (Jean). Joe was born on March 8, 1930 in Barkfield, Manitoba. After the death of his mother in 1942, Joe ventured to Winnipeg to seek employment. His first job was at the age of 12 at Arctic Ice. As a teenager he worked as an electrician's helper at Canada Packers. Later, he owned and operated a couple of grocery stores in Winnipeg's North End and in Point Douglas. On July 29, 1961 Joe married Eleanor Rybuck and changed careers. He spent a year at M.I.T. and later worked as a sewing machine mechanic and power engineer at several garment factories until 1983 when he suffered a series of strokes. Due to his ill health, Joe was unable to return to the work force. Joe's particular interests included auction sales, fishing, family events, cooking and watching sporting events.
