Obituary of Anna IWUC
ANNA IWUC
Peacefully, on Thursday, January 14, 2010 at the Grace Hospice, Anna Iwuc (ne Gorzen) passed away at the age of 84 after a long fight against cancer.
Anna is survived by her son Richard (Lydia) and grandchildren Roman and Natasha. She is also survived by her brother Peter Gorzen, nieces Dianne, Shannon and Holly, nephew Andrew and sisters-in-law Julie and Jean.
Mom was predeceased by her parents, David and Anna Gorzen, stepmother Helen Gorzen, husband Bronislaw (Bruno), brothers David, Henry and Johann (John) and sister-in-law Hazel.
Born in Margenau, Molotschna Mennonite Settlement, Russia in 1925, she and her family escaped the last violent days of the Russian Revolution and managed to come to Canada in 1926. After living near Fannystelle for a few years, the family moved to Winnipeg. Anna was only 12 years old when her mother passed away, so she quit school to look after her father and brothers David, John, Peter and Henry. She met Bruno in 1948 and they lived downtown until buying a house in the West End in 1961. The arrival of Richard in 1966 was an unexpected surprise. Anna also worked at various jobs over the years to support her family - including the Bay, the laundry and sewing factories. After Bruno's passing in 1981, Mom lived a simple life and enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, reading romantic fiction, lunch and shopping with her lady friends, garage sales and watching The Young and the Restless. She always had a pot of coffee on and was known for her salmon soup and holubtsi. Mom loved spending time with her grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Grace Hospice for their care and comfort during her final days.
Funeral services will take place at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street, on Friday, January 29 at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Chapel Lawn Cemetery.
Flowers are gratefully declined, however, if you wish to donate to the Winnipeg Humane Society or the Grace Hospice (c/o Grace Hospital Foundation) in Anna's memory, it would be appreciated.
