Obituary of Anne Hoffman-Mokanyk-Klymkiw

Anne Elizabeth Hoffman-Mokanyk-Klymkiw It is with deep sorrow the family announces the passing of our Mother and Grandmother on August 12, 2009. Mom was born in Dauphin Manitoba April 9, 1920 to Alexander and Katherine Klymkiw (nee Stupnisky), and raised in Winnipeg in the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox tradition, attending Ukrainian language classes, singing in the Church choir and in 1936 was crowned Queen of the Manitoba and Saskatchewan chapters of the Young Peoples' Club (C.U.M.K). Starting at age 16, after getting her education at Faraday Elementary School and then Sisler High School, she worked seven years with the Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Co. In 1940 she became a war bride when her first husband Sgt. Alexander Elliott Mokanyk was killed in action after serving six months as a pilot for the RCAF. In 1943 she settled in St. Vital with her second husband Roy Edward Hoffman to raise their two children. In those days Mom worked intermittently at Glenlawn Collegiate, the Manitoba Liquor Inquiry Board, the Metropolitan Planning Commission (three years). Ten years were spent working for the Humanities and Social Sciences of the Faculty of Education, University of Manitoba, retiring in 1979. In her spare time she enjoyed sewing, crafts and needlework, but the raising of her family was her first priority. Inasmuch as she was not an athletic person, canoeing on the Red River and playing tennis were activities she participated in as a member of the Winnipeg Canoe Club. Further opportunities for such pastimes were created at their lake cottage in Ontario. Before and after retirement Mom and Dad travelled through Europe, went on ocean cruises and spent Winter months in Palm Springs. Widowed again in 1997 after 54 years of marriage, Mom found enjoyment in the company of individual family members who went with her on cruises to the Panama Canal, Alaska and the Caribbean. Mom is remembered with deep love and affection by her son Robert, daughter Janice Sklar (Harry), and grandson Alan Sklar. She is also survived by nephew Jim Stone (Muriel) and family of Burnaby B.C., and niece Lesia Peet (Don Browne). She is predeceased by her Mother Katherine (1979), her Father Alexander (1958), Sister Phyllis Chopp (Nicholas) (2000), Brother Gerald (Mary) (2001) and Uncle Nick Stupnisky (Anne) of Rossburn. Mom was a compassionate person who for many years with Dad's help devoted herself to the care and comfort of her aging parents. At Mother's request a private memorial will be held. Her ashes will be laid to rest beside her husband at Holy Angel Mausoleum, Green Acres. A tree will be planted in her honour at the family cottage site. Flowers gratefully declined. If so desired, donations may be made to the Saint Boniface General Hospital or to the charity of one's choice in Mom's memory.
