Jean Gerbasi

Obituary of Jean Gerbasi

Jean Gerbasi (nee Dolinski) Peacefully on February 22, 2010 our beloved mother and grandmother passed away at Extendicare Oakview Place after a valiant struggle with Dementia and Alzheimer's. Mom is survived by her daughters Darlene Bourne (Barry), Judy Gerbasi (Irene Kuziw) and her son Eugene Gerbasi (Maureen). She is also survived by four grandchildren, Tamara Bourne (Chris Zastre), Corey Bourne (Kristin Tallman), Sean Gerbasi and Alyssia Gerbasi and one great grandchild. She also leaves to mourn her younger brother John Dolinski (Alice) of Kelowna and numerous nieces and nephews. Mom was predeceased in 1984 by her loving husband Frank of 41 years, her parents Josef and Antosrinia Dolinski, sister, Helen Keweriga, brothers Mike, Frank and Kasmir Dolinski. Mom was born on April 8, 1921 in Stuartburn, Manitoba. She moved to the city and met dad at the Queens caf. They were married on November 27, 1943. They began in the restaurant business in the1950's, running cafeterias at the Fairfield knitting mills and the old Norquay Building. Mom and dad were well known in the inner city, owning Frank and Jean's restaurant for 26 years. They were committed to the children of the inner city, often providing meals to children as an incentive for going to school and doing well. Mom was a vivacious person who loved baking, gardening and was renown for her wonderful pasta sauce and Italian delicacies. Mom's greatest passion though was her children and grandchildren whom she was devoted to, always supported, and believed could never do any wrong, even when we tried her patience. Mom's health gradually declined until the last few days when she struggled and finally succumbed to her illness. Our sister Judy was with her to offer support and comfort as she passed on. We would like to thank the staff of the second floor of Extendicare Oakview Place who provided care for mom. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 26th at Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, 510 River Avenue. Viewing will be at 10:00am with the service starting at 10:30am with Rev. Father Sam Argenziano officiating. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery 3990 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers donations in Jean's memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.
