John GANNON

Obituary of John GANNON

JOHN PATRICK GANNON It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of John Patrick Gannon on December 1st, 2010 at the age of 78 years. John was predeceased by his parents, Thrse and Patrick Gannon, as well mother-in-law Olga Care. Remaining to cherish his memory is beloved wife Donna; daughter Laurie (Derek); son Robert (Joyce); brothers Tom, Gerald and sister Patti; grandchildren Emily and Gwynneth; brother-in-law Al (Christine), as well as several nieces and nephews. John was born in Winnipeg at St. Boniface Hospital. At the age of 7, his family moved to Thunder Bay, where he spent the rest of his childhood. Returning to Winnipeg as a young man, John worked briefly at St. Joseph's Vocational School as a supervisor. He then became employed by Universal Printers, where he met his future wife and love of his life, Donna. After a short courtship, the two married in 1968. John eventually moved on to work for Standard Aero Ltd., where he remained until his retirement in 1995. John was a man with many passions, including music, reading, theology and philosophy. He also enjoyed the great outdoors through fishing, skiing and long walks. He loved sports and loved cheering the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Montreal Canadians on to victory. However, it was his family and life long relationship with the church that gave him the most joy. John was a kind and loving father, who instilled the values of respect, responsibility and altruism to his family. He was an active member at St. Peter's Church, where he served as choir director, organist, catechism teacher, lector, minister of the Eucharist and writer of the Profile News. He was also a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Peter's Men's Club. His dedication to supporting just causes became a source of inspiration to all of those around him. The family wishes to extend a special thank-you to the doctors at CancerCare Manitoba and the wonderful staff at Riverview Health Care. Prayer service will be held on Sunday, December 5th beginning at 8:30p.m. at St. Peter's Parish, 748 Keewatin St. with Mass on Monday, December 6th at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Gerry Ward officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory may be made to Riverview Health Centre.
