Obituary of Stanley Dovyak

STANLEY DOVYAK After a hard-fought battle with Myasthenia Gravis and with his family at his side, Stanley Frank Dovyak passed away on Sunday Aug. 1 at age 86. Stan will be lovingly remembered by Mary, his wife of nearly 56 years, his daughter Pat Horbal and son-in-law Russ, son Jeffrey and daughter-in-law Rhonda and grandchildren Julie Horbal and Luke Dovyak (Christina Dahl). He is also survived by his younger brother Tommy Dovyak and his nieces and nephew. He was predeceased by his parents John and Frances and siblings Walter, Adolph, Sophie and Jean. Growing up during the Depression in Winnipeg's North End, Stan developed a love for bowling, fishing and cycling and spent many hours socializing and playing cards at Arlington Athletic Club (AAC). After graduating from Isaac Newton School, Stan went to work for Winnipeg Hydro for more than 42 years and retired in 1985 as a supervisor of sub-station operations. Stan thoroughly enjoyed his retirement and spent his time bowling at Canadian Polish Athletic Club (CPAC) where he was a lifetime member, working in his large home garden and walking around the neighbourhood where he lived his whole life. Even after his diagnosis nearly 16 years ago, Stan enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, smoking his pipe and unsuccessfully cheering the Ottawa Senators towards the elusive Stanley Cup. Stan's family would like to thank the many staff at Seven Oaks Hospital in both Emergency and on 5U2 who provided care over the last seven weeks and went beyond the call of duty over the last few days. They would also like to thank Father Bashutskyy from Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, Stan's long-time parish. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Wednesday August 4 at 10:30 a.m. at Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church 965 Boyd Ave , with a private family internment to follow at a later date.
