Obituary of Helen Dangerfield

Helen Carol Dangerfield nee Davison With great sadness we announce the passing of Helen Carol Dangerfield on Friday, April 24th at Concordia Hospital. Carol was predeceased by her parents, her beloved husband of 57 years Crawford, and her sister Margaret (Peggy) Ludescher. She is survived and will be greatly missed by her daughters Deborah (Ray), Sherry (Craig), granddaughters Alexis (Daniel) and Michaela, by her Ludescher nieces and nephews Bill (Jeanna), Tanyss (David), Rick (Lisa) and Chris (Chris), and by her Dangerfield relations, brother-in-law Jack (Jean), sister-in-law Iris and nieces and nephews Lori (Jim), Kris (Tony), Paul (Cathy), Chris (Judy) and Mike (Jayne). Carol was the younger of Violet and Herbert Davison's two daughters. She was born in Winnipeg on January 6, 1927 and grew up on Monck Avenue in Norwood where she enjoyed an active and athletic childhood with swimming, skiing, and kayaking on the Red River with her lifelong friend Joy Scott. Graduating from Nelson McIntyre Collegiate, she went on to secretarial school and worked for Ashdown's Hardware. She met the love of her life Crawford shortly after his return from the war and they were married on October 16, 1948. They built a home together in St Vital and there raised their two daughters. Carol was active in organizing youth programs at her local community club and was a Brownie leader for many years. Children were always welcome in her home, visiting the "Raisin Lady" for a short chat and a snack of raisins. She also worked part time for a number of companies as a bookkeeper and receptionist but her family, her garden and her beloved dog Jody were her focus. Mom was a competitive person who loved to play games with her special passion being bridge. Luckily she had many good friends who shared this passion. The love of athletics continued into her adult life. She was a long time volunteer swimming instructor and lifeguard with the St. Vital YMCA, where she received an award for Outstanding Volunteer Service. Carol continued to cross-country ski into her 60's and became an avid golfer late in life. She and Crawf enjoyed many retirement winters golfing in Corpus Christi. Mom was very sociable and made many good friends throughout her life. The family would like to thank all her friends including those at Vic Wyatt House who were so supportive in her struggle with COPD, especially Sadie Owen and Joan Radford. We would like to thank Marg Scott for her long and continued friendship. Mom was always cheered by Marg's visits and news of the Scott family. Thanks also to Mom's home care workers especially Bev, and to the kind nurses and doctors at the Concordia ICU. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to the Manitoba Lung Association. A service will be held at The United Church in Meadowood, 1111 Dakota Street at 11:00 AM Friday May 1, 2009.
