Ethel Dackiw

Obituary of Ethel Dackiw

Ethel Louise Dackiw (nee McCann) It is with deep sadness our family announces the passing of our Mother and Grandmother on June 14th, 2010. Ethel's memory will be forever cherished by her sons Alan (Liz), Steven (Marni), and grandchildren, Julia, Ben, Spenser and Kolten. She is also survived by her sister Marg (Ken) and many special nieces and nephews. Ethel was born in Winnipeg on May 4th, 1939. She grew up in the North End of the City. She married her high school sweetheart and love of her life, Borden Dackiw on August 9th, 1958. Shortly thereafter, they moved to North Kildonan and began their family. Mom lived her life through her son's activities and could always be found in the stands cheering at our hockey games. Many memorable family years were also spent at Pickerel Lake, where numerous lasting friendships were kindled. Ethel also enjoyed working in children's education and spent many years as a Teacher's Assistant in River East School Division. Mom also delighted in all of our family celebrations. She spent endless hours organizing and cooking all of our favorite dishes. Mom was tireless in her quest to assist family members who were ill or in need of her help. After 47 years of marriage, Ethel was faced with the tragic loss of her husband on September 16th, 2005. She gathered strength from family and friends, but the sparkle in her eyes was the brightest when she shared time with her Grandchildren. She was a very special "Uma" to Spenser and Kolten and "Grammy" to Julia and Ben. Recently Mom had to deal with some problematic health issues. She was truly an inspiration of optimism and positive thinking. Mom faced her challenges head on and never expressed any self-pity or bitterness. Over the years Ethel developed many meaningful relationships. From family to life long friends, walking buddies to condo coffee pals, I know you all greatly enriched her life. Mom was a private person, but I know she loved each and everyone of you. In keeping with Ethel's wishes, a private family service has been held and interment has taken place at Brookside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers a donation in Ethel's name may be made to the Charity of your choice. Thank-you to all our family and friends for your love and support. Ethel has once again been reunited with Borden, the love of her life. Rest In Peace Mom
