Obituary of Michael CHOMYN
MICHAEL CHOMYN
November 19, 1927 - June 17, 2009
Michael Chomyn passed away with his family by his side at 2:00 pm on June 17, 2009. Mike had a long full life. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and a successful businessman. Mike came to Canada from the Ukraine in 1929 with his mother Catherine Olijnyk and father Peter Chomyn, his brother John and sister Dora. He lived all his life in the north end of Winnipeg. He married Bernice Porubanec in 1951 and had three children Gary (Jane) of Fort Langley, BC, Robert (Marlina Asensio) of Calgary and Teresa (James) Kraemer of Winnipeg.
After many years as a salesman, Mike and his brother Bill Chomyn decided to go into the Dairy Queen business on Osborne Street in 1962. They expanded the business and added a second store at Northgate Shopping Centre and then Dairyland on Main Street. Many family members worked with Mike and Bill over the years at the stores.
Mike was a life long member of Blessed Virgin Mary Parish, the Knights of Columbus, a longtime Winnipeg Jets season tickets owner and member of Pine Ridge Golf Club.
He and his wife Bernice enjoyed their road trips to visit their grandchildren in Alberta and BC and for many years enjoyed winters in Palm Springs. Even while Mike was battling cancer, he still managed regular visits west.
Mike is survived by his wife Bernice; and his three children and six grandchildren Allene Chomyn of Kitchener, Andrew Chomyn of Surrey, BC, Stephanie and Kassandra Chomyn of Calgary and Jacqueline and Kyle Kraemer of Winnipeg. He also leaves to mourn his brother Bill (Edna); sister Luba (Walter) Zueff and many nieces and nephews.
Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, 965 Boyd Avenue on Saturday, June 20 at 11:30 a.m.
The family would like to thank the staff at Riverview Health Centre, Cancer Care MB and Palliative Home Care Nurses.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mike's memory to Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church or the charity of your choice.
