Obituary of Ferne Chartrand

Ferne Chartrand (nee Irvine) On September 18, 2009 at St. Boniface General Hospital, Ferne Chartrand, beloved wife, mother, sister, and grandmother, passed away at the age of 56 years. Besides her husband Ron, she is survived by her daughter Nicole (Manny) of Winnipeg, MB, son Todd of Winnipeg, MB, and two grandchildren Alexander and Isabelle. She also leaves to mourn her passing her sisters: Deidre, Candace, Stephanie, Melissa, and Daphne, and brothers: Kelly (Gail) and Ray. She was predeceased by her mother Jean, her father Earl and her sister Donna. Ferne was born in Selkirk, MB and raised in La Riviere, MB and attended Nellie McClung Collegiate in Manitou. As a young adult, Ferne moved to Winnipeg where she remained for the rest of her life. Ferne and Ron married in 1973 and had two children, Todd and Nicole. She was devoted to her family and loved them unconditionally. Family was her life, especially her two grandchildren. She remained close to her brothers and sisters and always welcomed visitors with open arms. She was a supporter of many in the Metis community and was known for her ready smile and laughter. She had so much wisdom to share and always knew the right thing to say. Her working career included Gambles and Aloette. In her final years, Ferne worked at Neechi Foods Co-Op. She started there as a bannock baker and later became the operations manager. Despite her health complications, Ferne remained strong. Her strength and spirit allowed her to overcome her physical ailments. She lived her life to the fullest without complaint and had unwavering integrity. Anyone who knew her could attest to this. Prayers will be held on Wednesday September 23 at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, September 24 at 3:00 p.m. also at the Chapel with Rev. Fr. Kevin Bettens officiating. Cremation to follow with interment at a later date. The family would like to thank the nurses and staffs of St. Boniface Hospital's palliative care for their compassionate care of Ferne. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Boniface Hospital's palliative care.
