Obituary of Peter CHARLETON

PETER JOSEPH CHARLETON 1919 - 2009 Peacefully in the afternoon of August 24, 2009 at the age of 90, our Dad passed away with family at his side. Dad was predeceased by his wife Irene to whom he was married for 61 years. Irene passed away a year ago last spring. He was also predeceased by his two brothers; Godfrey (1967) and John (1989). Left to mourn are his younger sister Ruth Werbin of Ottawa, and his three sons; Peter and partner Teo; Ken and wife Gisele and grandchildren Kimberly and Justin; and Donald and wife Sheryl and grandchildren Reid, Kate and Claire. Dad grew up on Alfred Avenue in Winnipeg's North End. His father was a well known neighbourhood police officer, nicknamed "Pete the Cop". Being the son of a police officer, he had a very strict upbringing. This was to our benefit as Dad spoiled us rotten. Dad proposed to Mom shortly after she returned from England at the end of the war. During the pre-kid era of their marriage, they were actively involved in bowling, square dancing, snowshoeing and riding their bicycles everywhere. While we were growing up, Dad supported us in the various sports we played. Dad volunteered regularly at the Luxton Community Club hockey rink. He enjoyed playing cribbage with his sons and many friends. Dad also took a lot of pride in his garden and potted plants. Dad worked in the office at Walter Woods for 44 years until they closed their doors in the early 80's. He then went to work at Palliser Furniture which he truly loved. He finally retired from Palliser after his 69th birthday. Occasionally, Dad would go on day long fishing trips with his friend George Wilson. We have good memories of him getting home late at night with a big tired smile showing off the fish they had caught. Dad also had a passion for the horse races and was a fixture at Assiniboia Downs. As the grandkids grew, we spent many Sundays with Dad at the horse races for the kids' pony rides, petting zoo and bouncers. Once retired, he joined the North Centennial Seniors. The NCS kept Dad's schedule quite busy, as he participated in all their activities through the week and served on their executive. Mom and Dad also went on all kinds of bus trips with the NCS and with the Historical Society. Retirement suited Mom & Dad and the NCS played an important part in helping them enjoy their golden years. The family would like to thank staff and roommates at Seven Oaks Hospital for their care and companionship in Dad's last weeks. We would also like to thank Dad's many Homecare friends that enabled him to live at home. They took good care of Dad over the past two years. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, September 2 at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
