John Bezys

Obituary of John Bezys

John (Jonas) Bezys It is with great sadness that our family announces the death of John Bezys at the age of 82 on Saturday, September 20th, 2008, surrounded by his family at home. He is survived by his wife Monika, children Ruth (Mark), Norman (Tammy), grandchildren Patrick, Robin, Lisa, and Austin and Sister Ann Askinis (Jozas). He also leaves behind many nephews and nieces. John was born on October 25, 1925, in Lithuania, but left during the war to escape the threat of Russian Occupation. The family fled to Germany and then resettled in Winnipeg after the war. Winnipeg became home because of its large Lithuanian community and the many jobs that were available to him. John worked in the surrounding bush as a lumberjack and found employment with the railway gangs. Eventually, he was hired by the City of Winnipeg Water Works Department, where he worked until retiring. In his retirement he enjoyed tending his garden and fruit trees, reading books, stamp and coin collecting, and listening to old Lithuanian folk music. He was passionate about his Lithuanian roots and was a member of the St. Casimir's Lithuanian Church. John was a generous and non-critical man who was well respected by his co-workers. Great joy came into his life when his grandchildren arrived and he spoiled them profusely when he could. Heartfelt thanks go to our mother for her patient care of our father in the last few months. The family also wants to thank Dr. Harris and her staff at Concordia Hospital and Dr. B. Shah, who all made his last weeks as pain free as possible. John requested to be cremated and will be buried next to his mother at Brookside Cemetery. A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 26 at 11:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. with Pastor S. Moroz officiating. Interment will be attended by family members before the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in John's memory to CancerCare Manitoba.
