Obituary of Auguste Baumstark
AUGUSTE BAUMSTARK
Auguste, affectionately known as Gusti or Gussie to her friends, beloved wife of Steve, passed away on January 16, 2011 at Concordia Hospital at the age of 79.
She is survived by her husband, Steve, her son, Peter, and her daughter-in-law, Karen. Auguste was predeceased by her parents, Katherine and Gustav Grieb, her brother, Eduard Grieb, and her sisters Annetta Kohls, Anna Marie Knoll, and Frieda Hahnel.
Auguste was born on January 7, 1932 in Kobadin, Romania. Her family later moved to Lorch, Germany from where she immigrated to Canada in Winnipeg in April of 1953. She was married to Steve on October 19, 1954.
Auguste initially worked as a housekeeper and waitress, but her industrious and energetic nature led her to develop many skills and talents, including owning and operating a restaurant business, and assisting Steve in the construction and development of cottages at Lee River and thereafter at Sunset Beach on Lake Winnipeg. She was an excellent gardener and especially loved looking after her various flower and vegetable gardens both at home and at the Sunset Beach cottage, which she and Steve owned for approximately 30 years.
She was also a wonderful cook and baker and loved to enjoy the company of friends and family over a meal or just for cake and coffee. She had a sometimes mischievous sense of humour and a warm smile that she shared with all who knew her. She also had a competitive nature and thoroughly enjoyed getting together with her and Steve's friends for an evening of games or cards.
Auguste loved children and had compassion for all animals, especially their various pet dogs over the years, which were treated as members of the family.
Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, January 20, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street at Inkster Blvd. A private family interment will take place at a later date.
If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or to a charity of one's choice.
